If you are around youth athletics long enough, especially if you are evaluating talent for college coaches, you start to see something special in the eyes of the young athletes who will be solid prospects.

You can see it in the eyes of Alyssa Arden, a 2018 National Scouting Report softball pitcher from White House Heritage High School in Goodlettesville, Tenn. When she stares down opposing hitters in the circle, it is unmistakable. There, in her gaze, is a focus and competitive determination which every college coach wants to see.

Robby Wilson, National Director of Softball for NSR, thinks Arden has great upside.

“Alyssa is a right handed pitcher with the size and composure to be a big-time prospect,” Wilson wrote in his NSR scouting report. “She is already throwing 63 off the field and 61 game speed with a 43 change. Great command and knows how to work hitters to stay ahead. Has a variety of pitches to work with and late breaking movement getting a lot of routine outs as well as Ks. I wouldn’t call her a thumber, but exceptional spin rate. A 2018 who handles herself like a senior already. Plays good defense from the mound. Also plays short some when she’s not on the mound. A lot of upside with Alyssa and as she continues to work, will be a mid-upper 60s kid. Lead by action type player dedicated to her craft and her dream. Alyssa will be a big prospect at a high level.”

In a recent game, Arden proved she can do it all. She tossed a no-hitter and hammered two three-run home runs. While playing shortstop the next game, she hit for the cycle — a rare feat in softball — with a single, double, triple and a three-run homer, giving her 10 round-trippers for the season.

Arden’s 2016 stats are further proof of her promise.  In the circle, she has struck out 161 batters in 94.1 innings and boasts a very impressive 0.54 ERA. At the plate, she has driven in 38 runs.

A 3.3 student who hopes to pursue a career in sports management, Arden has set some lofty goals.

“My goal, for as long as I can remember, is to get a great education, play college ball and win a national championship,” she wrote in her personal message to college coaches. “I know through hard work and dedication, this is a dream that can come true.”
