Frost on the grass. Jackets on. Breath visible. Must be time for baseball.

It’s early November on the campus of Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina and National Scouting Report prospects, along with a handful of other prospects, are waiting for the frost to dissipate so they can stretch and warm up. While the day promises to be pleasant enough, the chill in the air isn’t lost on the prospects, their parents and NSR scouts queued up to run this important video combine.

NSR scout Ken Carlyle is excitedly poised for his 30-plus prospects, from high school seniors to eighth graders, to show off their considerable talents for college baseball coaches nationwide. Each prospect will be tested in a variety of skill settings.

Assisted by NSR baseball national leaders Brendan Kennedy and Mike Ewing, and nearly a dozen other NSR personnel, Carlyle’s kids will experience the unique nature of National Scouting Report and its powerful promotional marketing machine.

“What we are doing here is for our prospects, make no mistake about it,” Carlyle said during the pre-workout lull. To say that National Scouting Report is focused on the success of each of our prospects is an understatement. This video showcase clearly demonstrates that.”

Added Kennedy, “I came here from Maine today for this showcase. Mike Ewing came from Atlanta. And, along with a half dozen scouts from this region, five of our home office staff drove up from Alabama to help these NSR prospects. It’s a show of support that parents and prospects, not to mention college coaches, get from NSR that they could not have gotten from any other scouting organization. These kids are lucky, very lucky.”

NSR VP of PR, Robert Cagle, calls the prospects and their parents to the seats behind the home plate screen. For 30 minutes he captivates the crowd with essential information about the recruiting process and NCAA rules. Then he challenges them to put all distractions aside and give 100% of their efforts toward the showcase. Cagle’s booming voice and spot-on delivery captivate the audience.

The prospects dig in and go after it for the next four hours. Sixty-yard dash, bat exit speed, infield and outfield velocities, catcher pop times and pitcher velocities are all measured and documented by NSR baseball scouts. Each skill is put on digitized video to be posted on the prospects’ NSR personal Web sites, a necessity in today’s competitive, recruiting environment. Finally, each will be delivered to college baseball coaches at every level of competition.

As college scouts, we talk to college coaches daily about NSR kids. One of the first things they request is video. Luckily for NSR prospects, we have highlight videos to give coaches. But there are many cases where prospects do not have video. When that is the case, college coaches have no way of initially evaluating prospects for their roster. Because of this, many times coaches move on to more prepared prospects. These combines give prospects, including non-NSR kids, the chance to have videotape produced. Perhaps more importantly, they also see firsthand where they stack up against other prospects in their age group in terms of baseball metrics.

In the end, the day belonged to the prospects. Their determination to demonstrate their skill sets was apparent and on display at every station. Encouraged by NSR scouts throughout, these young college hopefuls doubtlessly received a leg up on their competitors. That is, after all, the point.

The NSR Video Combine Series will be in Atlanta, Georgia (Dec. 4), Sarasota, Florida (Dec. 11), and Knoxville, Tennessee (Jan. 8), we invite all baseball prospects to connect with the NSR scout near them and to ask about joining one of these key opportunities.
