Connections can only take you but so far in today’s recruiting environment. No one knows that truth better than Marty Hurney. See, few people on the American sports scene have the depth of football connections Hurney enjoys.

It would not be much of a stretch to say he knows nearly every college and pro head football coach in the country. If not, certainly, they have heard of him. Having been the Carolina Panthers’ general manager for over 14 years will give anyone that kind of national recognition.

Still, Hurney knew that when it came to his son Jim’s recruiting, he would bring on a scouting organization assured to give Jim the required exposure. Going through the process with his first son had taught Marty some hard lessons.

“We went through the recruiting process with my older son, Joe, so I knew how difficult it was and that we needed help,” Hurney observed. He ended up in a great situation, but it was a hard, anxious process for him. I learned that all my connections didn’t mean that much when it came to getting my sons college scholarships.  We didn’t want to put Jim through the same agony.”

That’s why Hurney did not shy away from turning to National Scouting Report. And before you ask, yes, he did have an NSR connection.

As Jim Hurney, a 2017 defensive back, was heading into his junior year at Charlotte Catholic High School, historically one of the state’s most competitive prep programs, Marty sought out National Scouting Report through an old friend.

“It’s all about fit for us. We want Jim to find the school that fits him best in every aspect of college, not just football,” Hurney said. For that to happen, a lot of info has to be passed along to college coaches and be made available to them. There is no way I could do that on my own. No parent can.”

Hurney continued, saying, “College recruiting is so competitive. NSR does all the things I wish I could do but can’t. They are reaching programs I would never think about and that is such a good thing for Jim.”

Pressing further, Hurney said, “This is the first major decision most kids will make in their lives – where to go to college. I have encouraged both of my sons to take ownership in this decision. I want to support them any way possible, but they have to be satisfied with it in the end. NSR has put a number of college opportunities in front of Jim and he is looking at each one carefully. Without NSR’s help, we would not be in a good spot right now.”

Reach out to the NSR scout near you and find out where your athlete is in the recruiting process. It may be that NSR has the ability to help your athlete get the exposure he or she deserves, just like Jim Hurney is getting today. If NSR can help Marty Hurney’s kid, think about what we can do for yours.
