There was a time when getting “the TROPHY” actually meant that you or your team won the championship. Winning the title equaled the prize. The Championship Trophy was that prize.

Somewhere along the way, the decision was made that “everyone needs a trophy”. The truth is that some folks felt that everyone MUST get a trophy. After all, we don’t want our children to think of themselves as losers. For goodness sakes, we can’t let young people realize there is someone better than them. We certainly don’t want to suggest to young people that the person or team that works the hardest or has the most talent should get the Trophy.

As a former high school athlete, SEC football athlete and coach, I  can remember when the Trophy was reserved ONLY for the champion. The Trophy was the symbol of being the Champion or the winner. The Trophy wasn’t given out just because we participated.  The Trophy was a motivator. It served as the driving factor that made individual athletes work harder and teams work for perfection. The Trophy was THE TROPHY.

Our country may be in the second generation of the “everybody gets a trophy” phenomenon. Folks, it really is time to change this type of thinking. Our young people need to realize that hard work, dedication and commitment are the things needed to win the trophy. The young people need to learn how to be humble in loss and how to pick themselves up and get back to chasing the trophy. It is time for our young people to see value in being the most talented. We need to put the emphasis back into playing the game and knowing how to win and how to accept loss.

There have been many college coaches speak out publicly about this issue of athletes feeling entitled. They see it as a problem and in many cases this mentality is weakening the character of young athletes. The “everyone gets a trophy” way of thinking has reached epidemic proportions in our society.

If you want your child to play in college, get in contact with an National Scouting Report scout for an evaluation.National Scouting Report does not believe that every person gets a trophy. The fact is only about 5 percent of of high school athletes get the chance to play in college. So truthfully, everyone doesn’t get a trophy. NSR chooses the athletes they will represent. Not every athlete will have the opportunity to be an NSR athlete. Over 95 percent of the chosen NSR athletes will receive scholarship offers.National Scouting Report will help deserving athletes get the Trophy they deserve. A scholarship to play in college.
