Hannah Towne had given up on scouting services! Then she met Sheila Thiery, a real life college scout for NSR.

National Scouting Report is a college scouting and recruiting organization.

Towne, a very talented volleyball player from Rochester, Indiana, was enrolled by her parents with a telemarketing scouting service, but something was awry – nothing was happening. She was getting zero attention from college coaches although the scouting service claimed it had done its job.

What made things so puzzling to the Townes was that Hannah, a 5’11” accomplished front row player, was named to the Indiana All-State teams the previous two seasons. Her GPA was a very respectable 3.4. She seemed a shoo-in to be recruited. So, what was wrong, the family wondered?

Then along came NSR scout Sheila Thiery who just happens to double as the company’s national volleyball co-director. Sheila, listening intently to the Townes’ story, knew right away what was going on.

“I first evaluated Hannah at the Windy City tournament in Chicago after she filled out a Scout Me Form request,” Thiery explained. Within weeks of working together, she had interest from numerous D-I and D-II schools.”
Thiery continued, “Hannah was interested in both indoor and beach volleyball. She was impressed that we had connections with coaches in both circles. Within four months, she had committed to Grand Canyon University to play beach volleyball.”

Prior to NSR’s involvement and Thiery’s groundwork on her behalf, the family was upset that their original scouting company’s efforts had done little to put Hannah on the map. Thiery, having seen this happen to families numerous times before, it was apparent to her that the other service was not talking to college coaches on her behalf.

Thiery explained this to the Townes and told them how she and NSR are strikingly different.

“When I told them that I would be their scout, not someone assigned to them from a telemarketing department in a Chicago high-rise, they were impressed,” Thiery revealed. “They immediately recognized that having me as their personal scout and recruiting guide, coupled with NSR’s reputation with college coaches, they would stand a much better chance of Hannah being seen, evaluated and recruited. The rest is history.”

Towne saw her reversal of fortunes as soon as National Scouting Report and Thiery started connecting her with coaches.

“The biggest difference between NSR, which is a scouting and recruiting organization, and  scouting services was the personal interaction [I had] with Sheila and the help NSR provided for me while picking a college. NSR worked with me hand-in-hand through the entire process until the minute I signed. Through it all they made me feel like their first priority,” Towne said of her experience with NSR.

Comparing the scouting organization, NSR, to the scouting service was not hard for Townes and her parents.

“On the other scouting service it was set up for colleges to just check out your page, but there was no further connect beyond that,” Hannah said. “I could see colleges looking at my page, but I would never know if they were interested in me. All of the phone calls and emails were all done on my own. I rarely got the chance to talk to anyone on the other scouting service. With NSR I could call or text Sheila whenever I had a question and she would get back to me right way. However, with the other service, I would not hear back for days and it was never the same person.”

Thiery has developed a reputation for her customer service and working alongside the Townes has been yet another success story for her as well as NSR.

“I take a personal interest in each of my athletes to ensure we find them the best fit for their future,” Thiery declared. Getting to know them as a player and a person is part of the process. When talking to college coaches, it allows me to share the athlete on a more personal level, beyond just their skills.”

Looking back on her journey which was looking bleak, at least until Thiery and NSR entered the picture, Towne now has a more positive perspective.

“I loved working with Sheila because within the small amount of time we had together she did everything she could to make sure I found a home,” Hannah said.  Almost every day she would be sending me an email about colleges and information that would help me when talking to colleges.”

On her family’s understanding of the recruiting process, Hannah says unhesitatingly, “I come from a family that has never gone through the recruiting process before, so everything was new to us. My father and I worked together at the beginning when I knew I wanted to play college volleyball and we struggled a lot. We both had a different idea of how recruitment should go. I wish I could have known about NSR earlier because it would have made the process flow so much better.”

“At the beginning of the process, I never knew what questions to ask or what coaches would be asking me while we talked on the phone. Right when we started with Sheila, she sent me all of that information without me even asking. I was so grateful to have had her working beside me during this process,” said college signee Hannah Towne.
