Spruce Creek Guard One of Sunshine State’s Top Players

Over the past two years, Dalton Barnes has emerged from relative obscurity to being widely recognized as one of the top guards in Florida high school basketball.  He is a junior at Spruce Creek High in Port Orange, Fla, and his NSR scout is Dave Johnson, Area Director for North Central Florida.  Dalton carries a 3.7 GPA and would like to pursue Sports Medicine in college.  The 6’1″, 175 scorer was recently named Player of the Week by the Daytona Beach News Journal.  DBNJ staff writer Michael Lewis interviewed Dalton upon receiving the honor.  Here is that interview:

What do you think you’ve improved on most this season?

I’ve definitely improved my leadership, and my offensive game has improved a lot. My jump shot is much better than last year — that’s the most improved part of my game. I played on Team Nike Florida (an AAU team) last summer and it helped a lot.

What kind of season do you think the team is having overall?

I feel great. Our team is really clicking right now. We’re peaking almost at the best time. This is the closest team I’ve been on, it’s the most talented.

How old were you when you first started playing basketball?

I was around 11 when I first started playing. I was a baseball player my whole life. I got into basketball because all my friends were doing it. I picked it up really fast and I really enjoyed it.

What are you usually thinking about when you’re standing at the foul line by yourself?

I just think it’s a great chance to get some easy points for my team, either to extend the lead or to help us catch up. I like the pressure free throws the best.

Who does the best Joe Giddens impersonation on the team?

Ha. It has to be Corey Favors. They’re friends and Corey has him down. We joke around with Coach right in front of his face. He laughs and then puts us back to work.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

X-Ray vision, I guess. I think it would be a great power to have.

No kidding. Favorite music to listen to before a game?

I like Young Jeezy, that’s my favorite. My favorite song is “No Hands,” by Roscoe Dash.

What web site do you go to more than any other?

Facebook. I’m on there 24-7, pretty much. That’s how I communicate.

You need one NBA player to make a jump shot to save your life. Who takes it for you?

Ray Allen. Without a doubt, he’s the man.

Wow, Ray over Kobe and LeBron?

Yes. Ray will make it.

Finally, Dalton, who’s your hero?

My grandfather, Robert Syford. He’s the one who got me started in sports. He passed away when I was in sixth grade. He was like my father figure when I was a kid.
