Temple's ability to play multiple positions gives college coaches a lot of appealing options.
Temple’s ability to play multiple positions gives college coaches a lot of appealing options.

Tess Temple is never going to overwhelm opponents — nor college softball coaches — with her size.  But the 5-foot-2 utility player will blow them away with her versatility, drive and competitiveness.

A 2017 National Scouting Report prospect from Heber Springs (Ark.) High School, Temple plays every position except catcher.  That spells flexibility for a college coach seeking a player who can fill multiple roster spots.

“It’s not every day that you find an athlete that can truly play every position on the field.  In Tess, you have that player,” NSR scout Trey Miller wrote in his scouting report. “Tess throws five pitches and can locate each one where she needs to, in and out of the zone.  Tess is fundamentally sound and serves as a field general and leader. She has a great arm to make the tough outs from deep in the holes and has great range.  She has a lot of power for her size.  She can hit for average but can also hit the line-drive gaps.

“My favorite thing about this young lady is that she is a tremendous competitor and works tirelessly at her game. This is an athlete that college coaches will want to meet and evaluate.

In her sophomore year, Temple hit .372 with 35 RBIs. Her on-base percentage of .410 and .442 slugging percentage were near the top of her team.  In the circle, she led her team with 13 wins, a 2.68 ERA and 131 strikeouts.

She’s also a standout in the classroom, sporting a 3.5 grade-point average.

“Although softball is my largest passion in life, it is not completely who I am,” Temple wrote in her personal message to college coaches. “I take great pride in my academics, youth group involvement, and family as well. In all facets of my life, especially softball, I give 110% to ensure I am living and performing to my fullest and most honest potential.”

Temple’s work ethic is second to none.

“Although I have always performed beyond expectations in softball and the classroom, I continue to let my work ethic aide me in improving as an athlete, student, and individual,” she wrote. “Whether at practice, BP, or school, I enjoy being the first person there and the last person to leave. My work ethic also enables me to utilize my natural leadership and help everyone around me become better athletes and students as well.”

Temple hopes that dedication pays off with college offers.

“Playing softball at the collegiate level has been my lifelong dream since I was a child,” said Temple, who plans to major in Education. “It has been my motivation throughout in getting up early to work hard, practice, and playing softball year-round since I was young.”
