It's not uncommon for recruits to go to college not knowing what coaches expect.
It’s not uncommon for incoming freshmen to not know what college coaches expect.

At National Scouting Report, our scouts speak to college coaches every day.

Yes, somewhere out there, even on holidays, NSR scouts are conversing with coaches about tournaments they’re attending; their recruiting needs; what they think about NSR prospects; and so on.

When NSR scouts get to know the coaches and the coaches realized that what they’re doing is genuinely in the best interest of the prospects with whom they work, natural barriers come down and strong bridges of trust go up.  It is the nature of relationship building.

No other recruiting organization enjoys access to coaches like NSR because our scouts take the time to get to know the coaches.  It is a mutually beneficial friendship.  Everybody wins.

Among other things, NSR scouts constantly talk to coaches about what they expect from incoming freshmen. If coaches have certain expectations we know our prospects can’t meet, we don’t bring them together. It would be a waste of time, and our reputation might be tarnished.

Over the years, we have passed along our knowledge of coaches’ wants and needs to NSR prospects. But we have never actually published a list — until now.

Here is our top 10 list:

  1. Respect the school, its students and faculty, your teammates and coaches.
  2. Honor the uniform.
  3. Be responsible to your team and coaches.
  4. Be on time.
  5. Work hard.
  6. Meet or exceed your academic demands.
  7. Support other athletes and those in the athletic department.
  8. Be a good sport to opponents.
  9. Win with class.
  10. Lose with dignity.
