Sierra Gentry is one of those extraordinary high school student-athletes whose inner strength and initiative will push her to excel in every phase of her sport, school work and life.  The West Texas A&M University softball signee is the kind of athlete, student and person with whom every National Scouting Report scout dreams of working.

Ryan Johnston, NSR area director for New Mexico and Arizona, considers himself lucky to have worked with the All-Star utility player.

“Sierra is a natural leader and a player other teammates can admire,” Johnston said. “She is not only a top athlete, but she is ranked second in her class and carries a 4.125 GPA.”

Alamogordo, N.M, is not exactly a hotbed for college athletes.  Situated on Holloman Air Force Base in South Central New Mexico, Alamogordo High School has about 1,700 students.  Sierra’s senior class has 375.

Still, in that relatively isolated setting, Sierra has excelled.  Scholastically, she has been tapped as a member of the National Honor Society, the National Junior Honor Society and Golden Scholar.  In sports, she is well known for her work ethic, dedication and leadership.

In 31 games her junior year, Sierra batted .452 in 112 plate appearances with seven home runs, 12 doubles, two triples, 36 RBI, 36 runs scored and 12 stolen bases in as many attempts.

In her articulate personal message to college coaches, Sierra wrote: “Softball is what I was born to play! Going to practices or tournaments has never been a task for me, but, instead, more of a joyful routine that fuels my love for the game!

Sierra's softball skills and grades made her an attractive prospect.

“Aside from being an athlete, academics have always come first. My work ethic inside the classroom, I believe, carries onto the field. Education gives me the desire and determination to succeed at all costs and allows me to better myself mentally.”

Describing how she became so driven as an athlete, Sierra wrote:

“I have had the drive to be a dominant player ever since the age of 12 when I went to Nationals and got to experience that atmosphere and high level of competition. I learned at a young age that there are numerous other girls in our great country with goals similar to mine. That experience made me realize that success will not come easy since I’ll be competing against thousands of like-minded girls for spots on college teams. Therefore, I have made a promise to myself to not let someone else outwork me for what I want in sports and in life!”
