Regardless of how good you are — or how good you think you are — the odds are stacked against you.

Only 5.2 percent of high school boys and 5.6 percent of girls will play NCAA sports.
Only 5.2 percent of high school boys and 5.6 percent of girls will play NCAA sports.

According to scholarshipstats.com, only 5.2 percent of boys high school athletes and 5.6 percent of girls high school athletes will compete in NCAA sports.

Of those, only 1.8 percent of high school boys and 2.2 percent of girls will play at the Division I level; 1.3 percent of boys and 1.2 percent of girls in Division II; and 2.1 percent of boys and 2.2 percent of girls in Division III.

On top of that, less than 1 percent of high school boys and girls will play at NAIA or NJCAA schools

If you hope to receive an athletic scholarship, the odds are really stacked against you. Only 2 percent of all high school athletes receive athletic scholarships and only 1 percent earn full rides. Athletic scholarships are offered by most NCAA Division I and II schools, NAIA schools and junior colleges.

According to the New York Times, the average NCAA athletic scholarship is valued at $10,409 per year. Average boys scholarships range from $21,755 for ice hockey to $5,806 for baseball. Average girls scholarships range from $20,540 for ice hockey to $4,899 for bowling.

Of course, many high school athletes qualify for academic scholarships. Virtually all NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA schools offer them. Some athletes receive academic and athletic scholarships.
