Gamecock Nation Shines During a Wild Week of Bewildering Wins

Last week no sooner had we honored the seven big football upsets by FCS schools over FBS schools this fall when a whole passel of underdogs rose up to get theirs.  Were they jealous?  Makes sense to us.  Who wouldn’t want to be named to the T*W*I*S growing list of honorees?  So, to make things fair and all that, here’s tipping our caps to the Davids, at least the ones we know about, who overcame the hype, the odds, the radio talk-show trash-talk (say that five times fast), and the over confident favorites’ now befuddled fans:

  • South Carolina’s Gamecocks had two huge upsets last weekend — in football over top-ranked and widely-believed unbeatable Bama, the University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide, and in men’s soccer the twentieth-ranked Gamecocks upset #5 Tulsa, proving that there really are two USC’s.
  • In women’s ice hockey, North Dakota shocked top-ranked Minnesota-Duluth.
  • In men’s DI water polo, #4 Stanford downed #1 USC, er, Southern California, while Cal doused #2 UCLA.
  • In women’s DI volleyball,  #12 UCLA stunned top- ranked Stanford while #18 Michigan slammed #6 Illinois.
  • In men’s ice hockey, tenth-ranked New Hampshire blew away #3 Miami Ohio.
  • And, there must be more out there.  If you know of one, clue us in…
