San Diego Native First to Earn Honor at Amherst This Season

Former NSR prospect Callie Neilson, a 5’8″ setter from Francis W. Parker High in Escondido, CA, has been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Volleyball Co-Athlete of the Week for the week of October 4-10.   The Amherst College sophomore averaged 12.0 assists per set to lead the Lord Jeffs to a 3-0 week on the road, including a 2-0 showing in NESCAC play.   She recorded 34 assists in a 3-0 win at Western New England College, 46 assists during a 3-1 come-from-behind win against Tufts University, and 40 assists in a convincing 3-0 victory against Bowdoin. Neilson’s 120 assists came on 291 attempts for a percentage of 41.2.  Callie is Amherst’s first player to earn the conference’s weekly honor in 2010.

Callie is averaging 2.41 digs and a NESCAC-best 10.89 assists per set during what has been a breakout sophomore season.  She has played a vital role in helping Amherst post a 10-0 record since a 3-0 setback to Middlebury nearly one month ago.  The Jeffs (13-1, 4-1 NESCAC) are currently third in the conference standings, trailing only Middlebury (13-3, 5-0) and Williams (15-6, 5-1).   The team has swept all but four of their opponents.

Amherst was ranked seventh in the latest New England Women’s Volleyball Association Regional Poll but should move up significantly after knocking off Tufts, which was ranked No. 1.  The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) is a group of eleven highly selective liberal arts colleges and universities that share a similar philosophy for intercollegiate athletics.

Amherst College is located in Amherst, Massachusetts, a town of 35,000 people in the western part of the state. The college’s 1,000-acre campus is adjacent to downtown Amherst.  Since its founding in 1821, Amherst College has become one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the nation, enrolling some 1,600 talented, energetic and diverse young men and women.

Callie’s NSR scout was Matt Rand from San Diego.
