Alexis Jones is shown here playing for the USA National Team last summer.

Irving (TX) MacArthur guard and NSR 2012 basketball prospect, Alexis Jones, couldn’t be stopped.  North Crowley coach Stephani Gray knew as much.  “You get closer to her, and she goes past you,” Gray said. “You give her a few inches, and she shoots a three over you.”  And more often, Jones chose the former.

Driving to the basket at will, Jones showed why she’s considered one of the top juniors in the country, scoring 35 points — going 20-for-23 from the free throw line — in MacArthur’s 68-55 win over North Crowley in the Class 5A Region I semifinal at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center in Fort Worth.

“My plan was to drive to the paint, and kick it — try to get my wings warmed up so that they can knock down a shot when I need it,” Jones said.  After making two first-quarter 3-pointers as MacArthur (34-2) jumped out to a 14-10 lead, Jones hit the first of 17 consecutive free throws in the second quarter.

Behind Jones and Khoria Newman — who scored 16 points — MacArthur’s lead ballooned to double-digits before halftime.  When North Crowley (35-3) closed the lead to six, 39-33, with 2:46 remaining in the third quarter, Jones stepped up, scoring or assisting on all but two of MacArthur’s final 29 points.
