Elle Buffenbarger recently realized her dream by committing to Youngstown State.
Elle Buffenbarger recently realized her dream of playing Division I softball by committing to Youngstown State.

Chalk up another NCAA Division I softball commitment for National Scouting Report.

Elle Buffenbarger, a 2017 pitching prospect from William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio, has verbally committed to play for Youngstown State University of the Horizon League. The Penguins, under head coach Brian Campbell, are coming off one of the best seasons in school history, winning 30 games for only the third time.

Named the 2016 the Greater Miami Conference Player of the Year as well as second-team All-State, Buffenbarger posted a 22-3 record, including eight shutouts, and a 1.37 ERA last season. She struck out an impressive 197 hitters.

Sheila Thiery, NSR area director for Southwest Ohio, discovered Buffenbarger.  In her detailed scouting report on the pitcher, Thiery said her fastball tops out at 62 MPH and her change-up at 48 MPH.

“Elle is an emotionally solid competitor in the circle,” Thiery wrote. “Standing 5-foot-8, her strong, muscular build and unwavering confidence provides an intimidation factor.  She is an excellent leader and communicator and knows how to rally her teammates.  She is all about making others better. As a sophomore pitcher with nine seniors on her high school team, she won the Leadership Award.”

Buffenbarger plans to pursue a degree in Early Childhood Education at Youngstown State.

“I am very involved in school and I help out with classrooms at our elementary school and special needs league for softball and baseball,” Buffenbarger wrote in her personal message to college coaches. “I also help in a classroom at our church on Sunday mornings and am in the Teacher Academy at my high school, which puts me above most education majors. I believe school is the most important part to success.”

Asked why she committed early, Buffenbarger said: “My goal and dream was to play Division I softball and YSU has everything I was looking for, including a winning record, which is an extra bonus. They also have the exact dual major that I want which is the most important. I am very excited to attend YSU in the fall of 2017.”
