Savannah Irwin

The recipient of our Female Athlete of the Day is Savannah Irwin, a 6’5″ center from La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, California.  This standout prospect carries a very impressive 3.82 GPA and plans to major in Biology.  Following her junior year, Savannah earned honors such as being named to the UT All-Academic Team and All-League 1st Team.  Her NSR scout, Dave Batzer, is glowing in his scouting report when he says, “As any basketball coach will tell you, you can’t teach height.  Savannah’s 6′ 5″  230lb. frame is an imposing site when she comes out on the floor.  The best thing is she backs it up with ability.  She has soft hands and is able to finish around the rim with both hands.  She has the ability to block and alter shots without leaving her feet and risking the foul.  She can hit the pull up jumper and even drop a three pointer when the need arises.  She would be a focal point in a high-low system.  She passes the ball well when double teamed and has a strong sense of the game and where she is on the court.  She is by no means a speed deamon but is working hard to improve both her speed and endurance.  She is young for her class and has some serious upside potential.  She has the ability to play DI and possibly dominate at the DII/DIII level.”  Savannah talks about her abilities and love for the game when she tells college coaches, “I was built for this game both physically and mentally. I might not be the fastest or quickest on my feet (yet), but I have determination and heart. My high school coach always told me that it doesn’t matter how good of a player you are if you don’t have heart when you play. Heart gives me the edge when playing against similar—or sometimes better—players. It prevents me from giving up.  It will give me the edge I need to compete in college.  Not giving up means that I test my boundaries. I’m not afraid to dive for a ball, or create some contact if it will help my team compete. I am always willing to do whatever it takes to help my team. They’re my family and I consider myself a team leader. I’m not afraid to talk to my teammates on and off the court as I consider communication to be a key aspect of basketball.”
