Picture yourself as a college softball coach. Your school’s administration, including the athletic director, has impressed upon you and other coaches the importance of recruiting prospects who would make the school proud.

Then you come across a note from a prospect that reads: “I won’t lie. Softball is not my life. I’ve grown through other aspects as well; maybe not always the most fun, but most important, is my schoolwork and community involvement.”

Impressive, right?

Those are the words of National Scouting Report softball prospect Logan Filo-Loos, a senior from Shepherd Regional High School in Dudley, Mass, in her personal message to college coaches.

Logan’s skills on the softball field, in addition to her outstanding academic record (3.9 GPA) and solid character, caught the attention of Southern New Hampshire University head softball coach Deb Robitaille.  The Pen Men signed Filo-Loos during the NCAA early signing period in November.

“Logan is a great fit for our program,” Robitaille said.  “She is a well-rounded player with a great energy! Looking forward to her four years at SNHU.”

Southern New Hampshire, an NCAA Division II school, is a member of the Northeast 10 Conference. Southern has captured the last two conference titles, so Logan is joining one of the best D-II programs in the nation.

While Logan has proven to be a legitimate college softball prospect, the careful way she positioned herself is a good lesson for all prospects.  In short, she is the quintessential high school student-athlete. College coaches are drawn to prospects with impressive resumes.  Moreover, Logan appreciates what softball has brought to her life.

“Softball fits me well and has provided me with a busy schedule that I believe has taught me not only how to manage my time but has put me on a path to a bright future,” she said.

However, it’s not quite as easy as it might sound.  Logan’s excellent work ethic and self-discipline are large parts of her success story. Both manifest themselves in all phases of her life.  In her message to coaches she talks about “putting in gut-wrenching work” to improve as a softball player. Logan is also devoted to Cross Fit, which demands a great deal of time and sweat.

“I started Crossfit when I was 14 and have loved every minute of it,” Logan said. “Crossfit is a mixture of Olympic weight lifting, gymnastics, and cardio exercises. I’ve been lucky to find a Crossfit ‘Box’ that has become my second family. It’s amazing as a teenager to have a place where you can just be you and not worry about being judged. Every day I go to the gym, there is a part of the workout where the physical and mental exhaustion is so heavy it’s inconceivable. Fighting through that feeling day in and out is something that I think along the way defined me. I’m a fighter and so competitive that I will never let myself give up. This mindset is something I take with me daily, whether it’s a standardized test, or the fourth inning of my third game of the day. I will not quit.”

Logan, ranked ninth in her senior class, is also devoted to academics. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Superintendent’s Advisory Council in which students “give the top educators in our school district student insight on how to make our amazing school even better,” Logan said. What’s more, she finds time to volunteer as a coach in the area’s Little League program.

Little wonder Southern New Hampshire was so impressed.
