At National Scouting Report, our scouts and office staff have worked with thousands of high school athletes and their parents during our 36-year history.  Rarely, however, do we see families that truly understand how recruiting actually works, its complexities and nuances.

Most families think recruiting is two-dimensional. In truth, it is three-dimensional.

If you have seen three-dimensional chess boards, you can imagine the complex nature of an already highly intellectual game under those circumstances.  The added layers make a complicated game even more intimidating, especially for novices.

College recruiting has far more layers than most families anticipate: from communicating and negotiating with admissions counselors and their offices; to arranging for productive on-campus visits; to developing fruitful relationships with coaches, team members and professors; to acting responsibly under NCAA and NAIA recruiting rules; to the ancillary academic eligibility process; to paying for college.

All of this happens in a condensed time frame. The pressures can easily overwhelm teenagers as well as mature adults.  In short, it is a tough road to travel with many moving parts to navigate and frequently too little time to do it. A few families make it on their own, but most fail, as NSR scouts have witnessed time and time again.

Sometimes families simply need short instructions and a nudge in the right direction. Other times they need a scout to be the driver.  Regardless, NSR does what is needed by each individual family.

That is why NSR was founded in 1980 by visionary Bob Rigney — to relieve families of this burdensome journey. Rigney’s own son, a solid high school baseball player, was getting no attention from college coaches. Rigney, who owned a printing company, decided to do something about his son’s situation. He printed one-page bio sheets and mailed them to college coaches. To his surprise, many responded and were interested in recruiting his son.

That success inspired Rigney to start a business helping other prospects get noticed by college coaches. NSR became the first college scouting service in America. Today, it is the largest on-the-ground, one-on-one, personal recruiting organization in the world. NSR scouts work in the communities in which they live and help families to successfully navigate all those trappings in recruiting’s obscure third dimension.
