Although unrelated to the legendary coach, Lombardi is making his mark in football.
Senior quarterback Anthony Lombardi would have made his namesake proud.

“The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.”  -Coach Vince Lombardi

Is there a more iconic name in American sports than Lombardi? Arguably not.

And when you are a Lombardi playing football, the inference people inevitably make is unavoidable.  The name, after all, has been synonymous with leadership, hard work and achievement for 60 years.

Anthony Lombardi plays quarterback at Trinity Catholic High School in Stamford, Conn.  Although he’s not related to the coaching great, there’s that name thing.  It casts a long shadow.

Anthony, a 2016 National Scouting Report prospect, and Vince Lombardi are eerily similar.  They share the traits of hard work, dedication, excellence and achievement on the football field.  Like the legendary coach, Anthony is a deep thinker who believes that once you commit, you are all in.

As good as he is at throwing the football and leading his team, Anthony is proving to be just as good a person, if not better, than he is as an athlete.

Anthony has the size (6 feet 3, 210 pounds), grades (3.8 GPA) and stats to impress many college coaches.  In two seasons as the Crusaders signal-caller, he threw for 3,141 total yards, averaging an impressive 16.5 yards per completion. He completed 56 percent of his attempts for 41 TDs and 14 2-point conversions.  Proving to be a true dual threat, Anthony also rushed for 10 yards per carry and six scores.

Cary Nadel, NSR area director in Connecticut, can’t give him enough praise.

Lombardi tossed 42 TD passes in the last two years.

“I was telling a college recruiting coordinator just yesterday that Anthony is the type of guy you want in your program, representing your program, and representing your school,” Nadel said. “His parents have definitely taught him the correct way to conduct himself on and off the field and in the classroom.”

Anthony lives up to the billing.

In his personal message to college coaches, it is very telling about him that he doesn’t mention football until about one-third of the way through his comments.  Instead, he talks about the importance of academics and his community volunteer work.

“My name is Anthony Lombardi,” he wrote. “My academic goals are to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.6 at Trinity Catholic High School, and to join the National Honor Society. Education is extremely important to me and my family. I have volunteered at our local Church food pantry many times and will continue to do so in order to help those in need. When the devastation of Hurricane Sandy took place, I organized a clothes/food drive for the victims of the storm in Staten Island, NY. I made three trips to Staten Island, New York, during this period.”

Finally, Anthony starts talking football.

“I am a dual-threat quarterback with a strong arm and fast feet, and can take off when I have to in order to help move my team down field,” he wrote. “For the past three years I have been working out with Alex Drayson of Sports Performance U on mechanics, footwork, and in game reads and strategies. I am committed to continuing to improving upon my football skills, both mental and physical. I always take responsibility for situations that are within my control and do not blame others. I am always there for my teammates whether it be on the field or off. I show poise by not getting rattled while under center or delivering the ball under pressure.

“I was named captain for my football and basketball teams. I work hard at everything I do, always giving my absolute best. Football is my passion. In the off-season I go to the football field four times a week and workout. I am the only one at the field because I am the absolute hardest worker.  I am very dedicated.  There is always room to improve which is why I work hard on all the details to become better. I am still working hard. My ultimate goal is to someday play in the NFL.”

“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.” -Coach Vince Lombardi.
