We may be in for an ugly spring and summer as the underbelly of NCAA football’s highest level begins to reveal itself in front of us on the Internet and sports outlets nationwide.  With the Fiesta Bowl scandal, ex-Auburn football players telling all about alleged pay-for-play schemes and Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel finding yet another knee-deep pothole to step in, there is not much good news to divert our attention.  Instead, if the trend holds, anticipate more players, and perhaps even former coaches, stepping forward with details of past under-the-table deals.  Some will tattle for the notoriety and their 15 minutes of fame.  Others, presumably wrought with guilt, will insist they had no choice but to participate in the shenanigans.  In any case, it all could signal additional program penalties and groundbreaking changes in how recruiting is conducted, boosters are overseen and players’ activities are monitored.  It had to come sooner than later as Pandora’s Box was brimming.  The Communication Age with the public’s news-now mentality is coming at a stiff price for those of us who really only want to watch college kids play the game we dearly love.
