Chances are good that if your child is a high school athlete that he or she is not getting all the attention you thought would be flooding your way.  Right?  Thought so.  There’s a good reason for that.  College coaches have all but eliminated high school games and events from their scouting process and have turned to club and travel team tournaments and showcases instead.  If you’ve been awake for the past five years, however, you probably know that.  Right?  Thought so.  Yet, where are the college coaches?  Why aren’t they knocking down your door?  Your athlete is practicing overtime and you’re spending gobs of money for travel or club sports and still…a handful of coaches have noticed, if that.

Here’s the thing.  College coaches walk into the tournaments your athlete is participating in with a list of athletes in hand they plan to scout.  And if you haven’t done what’s necessary to get your athlete on those coaches’ lists then you may as well take all that work and money and toss it in the nearest dumpster.  These coaches are not at these events to discover talent.  They are there to confirm the talent of prospects they already know about and have evaluated and have decided to spend their time seeing in person.  Why would they stop and watch your athlete who happens to be on an adjacent field?  There is no reason, none.  And, what if these coaches did show up and just wander around aimlessly.  Is it reasonable to think that a coach might happen to pass by just when your athlete is making the play of the day?  And, even if that happens, does it make any sense that due to one play seen in a walk-by viewing that the coach would stop, wait until the contest is finished, and then approach the coach to get your athlete’s info not knowing if he or she has the grades to qualify or the resume to play at their level?  No, it does not make sense.

So, here you are.  All the things the local pundits or so-called experts told you about recruiting and how it really works turns out to be crap.  And who’s suffered?  Your athlete.
