While the timing may indeed be coincidental, the NCAA has nevertheless  just released a statement on their Web site (www.ncaa.org) seemingly in response to NSR’s blog published yesterday afternoon which called into question the consistency of the organization’s recent eligibility rulings.  The 489-word statement addressed each of the areas of contention which we pointed out in our blog.  And, we appreciate the response.

The NCAA’s current statement does something, this writer believes, was missing from the previous explanations.  In short, it cuts to the chase and gives very clear details regarding why the rulings were made in each case.  While it is apparent that the tone is somewhat defensive in nature, i.e. “Nothing could be farther from the truth,” the resulting language does offer better insights into the decision making process than in any previous attempts.

While we do not apologize for our pointed evaluation of the rulings, we are grateful to the NCAA for having taken the time to tie their decisions to specific rules and positions.  It’s something we all needed to see and understand.
