How the Proposed 5th Year of Eligibility for Division II Athletes Could Hurt High School Recruiting

How the Proposed 5th Year of Eligibility for Division II Athletes Could Hurt High School Recruiting

The NCAA is considering a proposal that would allow NCAA Division II athletes a standard fifth year of eligibility. While this idea may sound like a great opportunity for current college athletes, it has the potential to create a major roadblock for high school recruits hoping to play at the next level.

At first glance, a fifth year might seem harmless, just one extra season for experienced players to continue competing. But for high school athletes, that additional year means fewer roster spots will open up. College teams typically have a set number of scholarships and roster spaces, and when upperclassmen stick around an extra season, those openings that would have gone to the incoming freshman class can vanish entirely.

The Ripple Effect

This shift could ripple across the recruiting landscape. Instead of coaches focusing heavily on scouting high school talent, they may choose to retain their veteran players, who already know the system, rather than investing in developing a new recruit. That means fewer offers, more competition for the limited spots that remain, and a longer, tougher road to earning a spot on a college team.

For high school athletes, this could mean adjusting expectations, expanding searches to other divisions or levels, and being even more proactive. The bottom line: if the fifth year passes, the squeeze on roster spots will make the recruiting battle even more competitive and high school athletes will feel it the most.

  1. NCAA didn’t seem to care when they screwed the class of 2022 and 2023 during COVID. They didn’t think it through and no the repercussions are here. Let them have that 5th year, especially class of 2022.
