Bears QB Named MVFC Player of the Week

Former NSR prospect, Cody Kirby, is following up where he left off last season as the starting quarterback for the Missouri State Bears football team.  The Missouri Valley Football Conference announced its weekly awards on Sunday (Sept. 12), and Cody, from Rogers, Arkansas, was named Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Bears’ game at Big 12 power Kansas State.

In his 32nd consecutive star, Cody collected a career-high 333 yards of total offense in helping the Bears accumulate their highest point total against an FBS program since 2002.  A senior co-captain, Cody threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions against the FBS Wildcats, while rushing for a team-high 52 yards on 10 carries. It was his highest rushing output in 7 games and the third-highest passing total of his career.

In the 48-24 loss, he engineered scoring drives of 80, 58, 74, and 99 yards. The Bears collected 447 yards of total offense in the game, while committing just one turnover.

For the season, Cody’s numbers are impressive.  He has earned a 119.8 efficiency rating in three games having completed 51 passes in 97 attempts with only two interceptions for a total of 667 yards and four touchdowns.  That gives him an average of 222.3 passing yards per game.  His completion percentage is 52.6.

The three-year starter entered 2010 as arguably the top signal caller in the MVFC.  In his final season, Cody is ranked No. 1 in Missouri State history in TD passes (37) and No. 2 in passing yards (5,876), completions (511), attempts (859), and plays (1,136), third in total offense (6,309) and 4th in completion percentage (59.5%).  He was ranked as the No. 12 Division I FCS quarterback by Phil Steele’s College Football Preview.
