Rookie Head Coach Captures Conference Honor

Former NSR golf prospect and current Wagner College head women’s golf coach Christopher Fourman was named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Coach of the Year, after guiding the Seahawks to a fifth place finish at the 2011 NEC Championship last weekend. Fourman’s tutelage helped lead the Seahawks to their best team finish since 2006, as the Green & White placed fifth, missing out on fourth place by just two strokes and third place by just seven. “It was definitely a testament to how hard our girls worked this year,” Fourman added. “We finished 10th last year, so for them to jump up that much was a real statement. They’re the reason I got this award.” The award, which is voted on by fellow NEC head coaches, puts Fourman in exclusive company as he is the first Wagner head coach to be named NEC Coach of the Year since Seahawk baseball coach, Joe Litterio, received the award in 2009. The last Seahawk be named a conference coach of the year was former water polo coach Patrick Beemer who earned MAAC Coach of the Year honors in 2010. “It’s a real compliment from my peers in the conference, who are also extremely successful in their own programs, for them to name me Coach of the Year,” Fourman said. “There are a lot of great teams in this conference, with a lot of great coaches and student-athletes.” Fourman, a 2008 graduate of Wagner, was promoted to the head coach position of the Seahawks men’s and women’s teams in the winter after working as an assistant during the 2009-2010 season. The fifth place finish marked the best finish since 2006 when the Green & White took fourth out of the then eight team field.  Coach Fourman’s NSR scout was Dave Johnson, Northeast Florida Area Director.
