All the hype surrounding the upcoming Alabama-LSU matchup is legitimate. It will be the first ever 1 versus 2 head-to-head clash between SEC football programs in the regular season, at least at this late stage of the season. So, that alone makes the game noteworthy. Add the untimely loss last weekend by Big 12 power and pre-season #1 Oklahoma and Wisconsin’s Hail Sparty shocker in East Lansing and you’ve got yourself a helluva head knocker on tap.
It’s all set up for a clash of the titans for sure, but lurking in the background are two teams which could benefit most from the pounding the super programs are laying on one another — Boise State and Clemson. Lurking just under the radar screen, with either LSU or Bama obviously going down, then the high probability of an Oklahoma State defeat at the hands of a vengeful Sooner squad and then with the Tiger-Tide winner potentially dropping the SEC title game later in the year and suddenly Boise State and Clemson are looking good.
Of course, Clemson has to skirt a number of tough ones to get there, unlike the easier ride the Broncos will face. Clemson’s Tigers will have to get by a suddenly underachieving Georgia Tech and then overcome the totally unpredictable Ol’ Ball Coach’s Gamecock Gang, but it’s there for the taking if they can muster up the courage to bang through unscathed. Boise, well, they have TCU and their last year’s nemesis Nevada left to beat. With our Heisman favorite Kellen Moore, whose countenance is akin to Roger Moore’s portrayal of James Bond 007, at the helm of a potent BSU offense, there’s no good reason to think that the Broncs will hiccup along the way.
In the end, it will probably be Alabama and Boise State in the BCS championship. People and pundits have conveniently forgotten the 463 yards through the air the Bengals yielded to an only okay West Virginia team. That stat alone should make someone with some football knowledge shriek, but it hasn’t happened. No, Alabama will not throw the ball that much, but you can bet that Saban and his crew are pouring over the Mountaineer video and will exploit any pass-related LSU weaknesses.
