Kody Backus

Our Male Athlete of the Day, Kody Backus, is an excellent baseball prospect, but he will get as much attention from college coaches for his outstanding academic record as for his skills on the mound.  This 4.0 student has dreams of becoming an engineer, but he will also major in mathmatics if that will allow him to compete at the next level.  Also a utility player, Kody brings an array of skills to the table.  His NSR scout Craig Stanger attests to that fact in his scouting report as he lists Kody’s considerable talents: “Very athletic player that not just relies on his athleticism, but understands the game.  Has shown great versatility. Is one of the top pitchers for the team, also plays 1st base. Has played multiple positions when asked.  He demonstrates the epitome of coachable.  Fundamentally, he is solid both offensively and defensively. Can hit with considerable power for his size and has shown he is a smart place hitter.  Regularly bats in the 3-4-5 positions  As a Pitcher he shows great control  Kody shows great work ethic, strives to improve everyday. Takes practice very serious and expects the same from his teammates.”

In his essay to college coaches, Kody pulls it all together when he says, “I will be graduating at the top of my class because of qualities that I learned through baseball.  I am a driven, committed, and disciplined student in the classroom, as well as on the field.  I am an extremely coachable player, and have been told that my ability to mentally play the game, as well as physically play it, contribute to our team’s ability to win games.  I love the game of baseball and continue to work hard to improve at every practice and game.  On game days, I am the last one to leave the field.  I am a true team player, and I never give less than 100%.  I expect that of my teammates, and they look up to me for leadership.  I look forward to the opportunity to play at the college level while I pursue my academic dreams.”
