Being ready with a plan will help every high school prospect

NSR prospects like Savanah Stender have the adantage of an NSR scout giving them advice.

There is no doubt that in four days NCAA recruiting will turn a huge, dramatic corner. And if you are a high school prospect, or the parent of one, be ready because all, well, everything is about to cut loose.

With all Division II coaches and men’s DI basketball being permitted to have unlimited contact with rising juniors, a full year earlier than was previously allowed, the cell phone airwaves will be abuzz with fresh activity. Coaches will be on the busily calling every prospect on their white boards. Unprepared prospects will be taken aback thinking that coaches have crossed the boundary of recruiting legalities. The initiated will have a field day.

But what is the prospect to do? First, you have to be ready to start documenting and filing away these calls and contacts made by coaches. It could be overwhelming, to say the least, so keeping track of the calls will be a must. Normal recruiting will stand on its ear and will appear abnormal to many. That is why every prospect should have a good plan in place and ready themselves for the ensuing changes. It’s recruiting 101 pushed ahead a full 12 months and it’s going to take a lot of prospects and parents by surprise.

Consider what you will say and how you will respond to coaches. Be alert to invitations to make unofficial visits to campuses and to attend summer camps. Always have your schedule at arm’s length. Be ready to commit to getting the ball rolling, or not. Coaches that get lukewarm reactions will move on. Coaches that notice a glimmer of hope will pounce at the opportunity to start building relationships over the next two years which will in some cases wind up resulting in a scholarship offer.

Recruiting has always been a more nerve racking process than prospects and parents anticipate. It’s wrought with decisions that have to be made, some quickly. And recruiting will continue to be highly competitive. The coaches that get into the mix first will have an advantage. And the prospects which are up to the task will have untold chances to widen their opportunities in the end.

At NSR, our on-the-ground scouts are constantly in motion serving client-prospects and their families by providing clear, concise and well-educated advice about how the recruiting process works. Our scouts do not tell their clients what to do, but instead offer options to scenarios which families would not have otherwise been aware existed. That is the value of NSR. Besides aggressively promoting prospects to college coaches, we offer a firsthand feel for the situations through experience gained over 32 years of providing personal assistance to prospects wanting to maximize their scholarship opportunities.
