Breaking Out of the Box: How College Coaches Evaluate Athletes

When it comes to college recruiting, every coach has a “box.” Inside that box are the key metrics, stats, and attributes they recruit by position—height, weight, speed, vertical jump, throwing velocity, batting average, GPA, and more. These position-specific benchmarks help coaches identify athletes who fit their program’s needs.

But here’s the truth: that box looks different for every coach and every level of play. What checks the box for a Division I coach might look completely different to a Division II, Division III, NAIA, or JUCO program. Each coach has their own version of what “ideal” looks like—and meeting those numbers is just the starting point. Coaches are looking for athletes who meet and exceed those benchmarks.

Before the Box: The Eye Test

Before stats or numbers ever come into play, there’s the eye test—the coach’s first impression. Whether that first look happens in person or through video, coaches know what their “ideal” athlete looks like physically. They visualize the right height, frame, and overall presence for each position on their roster.

If an athlete doesn’t pass the eye test, the box never comes into play. Coaches want athletes who look like athletes—fit, healthy, confident, and dominant in their presence. Once a coach recognizes that an athlete has the physical makeup they prefer, then the measurable box becomes critical.

Inside the Box: The Measurables

Every year, college coaches are trying to improve their roster. That means they aren’t just looking for athletes who meet their minimum “box” requirements—they’re searching for those who surpass them. Numbers matter because they confirm an athlete can perform at the level that coach’s system demands.

Beyond the Box: Live Evaluation

By the time a coach watches you live, they already know your stats, highlights, and testing numbers. Now, they’re looking for confirmation. They want to see if you move the way they expected, if your body type matches your projected position, and if your presence stands out on the field, court, or track.

This live evaluation is where athletes can truly separate themselves. Coaches are observing how you carry yourself, how you interact with teammates, and how you compete when things don’t go your way. That visual confirmation—that the numbers align with the player—is often what seals the deal.
