Do High School Stats Matter to College Coaches?

Do High School Stats Matter to College Coaches?

It’s a question many athletes and parents ask: Do my high school stats matter to college coaches? While it might seem like impressive numbers on a stat sheet would be a key part of getting recruited, the truth is, stats are far less important than most people think. In fact, most college coaches never ask about stats.  They will ask about certain metrics that are relevant to their program. It’s more important to have certified metrics that have been tested and validated by trusted sources.

Stats Are Subjective

High school stats are subjective. The level of competition varies drastically from one school or region to another, and in many sports, stats can be recorded inconsistently or influenced by who’s keeping the book. A .600 batting average or 25 points per game might look great on paper, but college coaches know those numbers don’t always tell the full story. That’s why stats rarely hold any real weight when it comes to recruiting decisions. Metrics, on the other hand, can be important if they are believable and verified. Unrealistic metrics or metrics not taken correctly, can actually hurt the credibility of an athlete. Certified metrics are real and objective.

What Matters to College Coaches?

What does matter is how you perform against strong competition, your athleticism, fundamentals, decision-making, coachability, academics, and whether you fit the specific needs of a program. College coaches do their own due diligence. They watch game film, attend tournaments and camps, speak with scouts, consider a player’s certified metrics and evaluate athletes on their watchlist. Whether your stats are eye-popping or average, if you don’t fill a role they’re looking to recruit, the numbers won’t change your recruiting fate.

How Do I Get My Information In Front of Coaches?

The crucial first step is getting evaluated by a college scout. It ensures that your abilities are accurately assessed by someone who understands what college coaches are really looking for. NSR scouts are trained to identify talent and they know how to match the specific needs of college programs with the type of athlete you are. By understanding your skill level, academic standing, personality, and playing style, an NSR scout can position you in front of the right coaches at the right level, increasing your chances of finding the perfect fit. Their experience and network take the guesswork out of recruiting and help athletes avoid wasting time chasing programs that aren’t a true match. More importantly college coaches depend on NSR scouts and their evaluations so they know which athletes to spend time on and the ones not to waste time on.
