Santana Parra will play this fall for Yavapai Community College.
Santana Parra will play this fall for Yavapai Community College in Prescott, Ariz.

It is easy to see why Santana Parra was selected New Mexico’s 2016 Gatorade Softball Player of the Year.

A 2016 National Scouting Report prospect, Parra put up numbers any player in any state would be proud to post. She also led her freshman-laden Centennial High School team to a state championship.

Parra, a 5-foot-7 pitcher, posted a 15-2 record with a 1.88 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 115.2 innings. Offensively, she produced a .551 batting average with nine home runs, 40 RBIs and a 1.025 slugging percentage, leading the Hawks (26-6) of Las Cruces to the Class 5A state title.

Parra, who also boasts a 3.7 GPA, signed with the Yavapai Community College in Prescott, Ariz. The Roughriders (50-17) captured fourth place in the recent National Junior College Athletic Association Softball World Series.

NSR area director Ryan Johnston couldn’t heap enough praise upon his prized pitcher.

“The ultimate package of hitting and pitching,” he wrote in his NSR scouting report. “Great attitude and passion for the game. Very coachable and a natural leader. This girl has the will and drive to be the best!”

Softball has become more than a game to Parra.

“Ever since I started playing tee ball with an all-boys team, I fell in love with the sport of softball,” Parra wrote in her personal message to college coaches. “The sport I fell in love with has now become my life. The countless hours of pitching practice, conditioning, and batting practice have helped me to become the player I am today.

“I am always striving to be better. If it is getting more spin on my pitches, or hours of tee work, I will work hard to be better than my best today. This is my dream and this is my passion. My love for softball continues to grow and it has lit a fire in me to be the best I can be. I am truly blessed to be able to play a game I love and compete at the highest levels.”

Gatorade selected Parra for her all-around skills and accomplishments.

“Santana is an extremely talented softball player who throws an assortment of pitches,” Centennial High School coach Alex Maynez said. “At all times, I have found her to be a loyal, dependable, hard-working and self-motivated player both on and off the field. She has demonstrated that she has what it takes to play at the next level. She is very committed to her education.”
