The SAT and ACT are used by about 80 percent of U.S. colleges and universities in their admissions process.<\/p>\n<p>To help students prepare for the new SAT and ease their fears, National Scouting Report, with information provided by the College Board, has compiled a list of the major differences between the new exam and the old one:<\/p>\n<p><strong>TOTAL TESTING TIME<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Old:<\/strong> 3 hours, 45 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New:<\/strong> 3 hours, plus 50 minutes for Optional Essay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FORMAT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Old:<\/strong> Pencil and paper only.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New:<\/strong> Pencil and paper or computer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMPONENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Old:<\/strong> Critical reading, Writing, Math, Mandatory Essay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New:<\/strong> Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (Reading Test, Writing and Language Test), Math, Optional Essay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READING CHANGES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Old:<\/strong> Memorizing vocabulary, sentence completion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New:<\/strong> Evidence support, data reasoning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WRITING CHANGES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Old:<\/strong> Individual sentences and grammatical rules.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New:<\/strong> Passage-based questions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MATH CHANGES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Old:<\/strong> Geometry and shapes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New:<\/strong> Data interpretation and graphs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9562\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9562\" style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SAT.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9562\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-9562 \" src=\"\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SAT-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"The College Board has made some major changes to the SAT.\" width=\"371\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SAT-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SAT.jpg 341w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 371px) 100vw, 371px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9562\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The College Board has made some radical changes to the SAT for the first time since 2005.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>ESSAY CHANGES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Old:<\/strong> Required and given at the beginning of the SAT; 25 minutes to write; Tests writing skill (students take a position on a presented issue).<\/p>\n<p><strong>New:<\/strong> Optional and given at the end of the SAT (colleges and universities determine whether they will require it for admission); 50 minutes to write; Tests reading, analysis and writing skills (students produce a written analysis of a provided text source).<\/p>\n<p><strong>SCORING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Old:<\/strong> Scale ranging from 600 to 2400 (200 to 800 for Critical Reading, 200 to 800 for Math, 200-800 for Writing); Complex scoring system (one point for a correct answer, quarter-point deduction for an incorrect answer, no impact for blank responses).<\/p>\n<p><strong>New:<\/strong> Scale ranging from 400 to 1600 (200 to 800 for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, 200 to 800 for Math; Scale ranging from 2 to 8 on each of three dimensions for Essay with results reported separately); Rights-only scoring system (no penalty for guessing).<\/p>\n<p><strong>SCORING COMPARISON<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Old:<\/strong> Good score (75th percentile): 1720; Median score (average): 1500; Bad score (25th percentile): 1270.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New:<\/strong> Good score (75th percentile): 1150; Median score (average): 1000; Bad score (25th percentile): 850.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The big day is almost here.
