Call him 0ld school.<\/p>\n

That’s what you think when watching National Scouting Report basketball prospect Kobe Toney<\/a>. \u00a0The 5-foot-11 point guard from Dublin High School<\/a> in California is a throwback to how many astute observers think the position should be played.<\/p>\n

No wild off-balance three attempts. \u00a0No out-of-control slashes to the bucket. \u00a0No flashiness with the ball. \u00a0No wasted passes.<\/p>\n

Toney is as smooth and in control as any high school floor leader you will find. \u00a0He takes control of the offense, sees what the defense gives him and makes things happen whether it’s forcing the defense into collapsing on him; spotting the open man and hitting him with a pass; or draining the runner or jumper when he’s open.<\/p>\n

Tony can play the position well, and he will help some fortunate college team the moment he steps on campus. \u00a0Then again, if you have the name Kobe in hoops, you better play well.<\/p>\n

Last season, he\u00a0averaged\u00a010.7\u00a0points,\u00a03.5 assists, 3.7 rebounds and only one turnover per game as a junior. \u00a0His nearly four steals per game speak to his quickness and ability to defend end to end. \u00a0Coupled with his rebounding and excellent assist-to-turnover ratio, you have a player who contributes in every aspect of a game.<\/p>\n

This year, the senior remains a consistent contributor on both ends of the floor. \u00a0 He is averaging nearly 11 points per game along with more than four rebounds and assists. \u00a0He turns the ball over only once per contest.<\/p>\n

NSR scout Stacey Harris<\/a> couldn’t praise Toney enough.<\/p>\n

“Kobe is a dynamic guard that plays both the point and the two positions,” said Harris, a 10-year NSR veteran, who discovered him in Northern California. “He has great leadership skills and instincts in the passing lanes and doesn’t settle for long outside shots. He is fearless when penetrating and knows how to get to the free throw line.”<\/p>\n

Toney\u00a0is also a solid student. \u00a0He carries a 3.0 GPA and prides himself in working hard in the classroom.<\/p>\n

“In terms of my education,” he said, “I strongly believe that academics must come first. I’m convinced that a great education can open up great opportunities. \u00a0I’ve made high honors my three years in high school and plan on continuing making high honors until I graduate [this spring]. \u00a0My goal is to be the best student-athlete I can be in college.”<\/p>\n
