Prep athletes today must start early to build the street rep of being a dependable, solid person if they want coaches to recruit them.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Two outside forces are major contributors to today’s high school athletes having to demonstrate a high level of maturity to college coaches.\u00a0 The spate of troublesome behavior by college athletes having run afoul of the law and the proliferation of technology in recruiting are putting the pressure on young aspiring college athletes to be more attuned to their character and comportment.<\/p>\n

When was the last week, if not day, that we’ve not\u00a0been subjected to\u00a0an expose on a college athlete that has tripped and fallen into the rubble of other ill-fated athletes unable to help themselves?\u00a0 This has led college coaches to more carefully scrutinize the actions and attitudes of the prospects they target to recruit.\u00a0 What’s on the line is more than wins and losses, but the coaches’ jobs as well.\u00a0 And, in the world of college sports, the prime objective of any coach has sadly devolved to keeping his or her job.<\/p>\n

There was a time when athletes’ antics\u00a0had little or no impact on a coach’s employment status.\u00a0 No longer.\u00a0\u00a0Today, the character and actions of athletes are directly linked to\u00a0their coach and that\u00a0coach’s ability, or inability, to\u00a0properly control their program.\u00a0 Justifiable or not, coaches are coming and going faster than ever before in\u00a0the history of college athletics.\u00a0\u00a0And the\u00a0acceleration of this revolving\u00a0movement\u00a0can be traced to\u00a0who coaches recruit and how they manage those recruits once they arrive on campus.\u00a0 Even the\u00a0off-campus conduct\u00a0or athletes is now\u00a0inextricably tied to their coaches.<\/p>\n

These are lessons which high school,\u00a0not to mention middle school, athletes must heed and respond to with careful calculation regarding\u00a0their\u00a0own activities, the friends they cling to, and\u00a0the trouble they\u00a0purposefully avoid.\u00a0 Without this type of planning, a\u00a0promising athlete can be left\u00a0at the wayside, quickly to be forgotten and passed on.<\/p>\n

In this game, as it is played in modern recruiting, adults are\u00a0on the hot seat.\u00a0 It is they who must\u00a0tend to the fire and make certain that their athlete does not\u00a0stray far, if at all.\u00a0 But, isn’t that the way human behavior has always shaken out – parents lead and their children follow; parents discipline and their children learn;\u00a0 parents\u00a0provide high expectations and children strive to satisfy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
