{"id":7362,"date":"2013-07-19T09:20:22","date_gmt":"2013-07-19T14:20:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nsr-inc.com\/blog\/?p=7362"},"modified":"2013-07-19T09:20:22","modified_gmt":"2013-07-19T14:20:22","slug":"flippin-doesnt-work-for-college-coaches-during-evals-of-high-school-athletes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/flippin-doesnt-work-for-college-coaches-during-evals-of-high-school-athletes\/","title":{"rendered":"Flippin&#8217; doesn&#8217;t work for college coaches during evals of high school athletes"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_6698\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6698\" style=\"width: 265px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nsr-inc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Athlete-fist-pump.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6698\" alt=\"Athletes that exude a positive attitude during competition and socially are very attractive to college coaches.\" src=\"\/\/nsr-inc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Athlete-fist-pump.jpg\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6698\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Athletes that exude a positive attitude during competition and socially are very attractive to college coaches.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Flippin&#8217; a bat.\u00a0 Flippin&#8217; a cap.\u00a0 Flippin&#8217; a towel.\u00a0 You name it and flippin&#8217; gets a high school athlete into hot water with college coaches.<\/p>\n<p>We scout alongside college coaches every day at tournaments, matches, meets, showcases, combines and camps.\u00a0 And the conversation often abruptly turns to an athlete that does something\u00a0inane\u00a0like flippin&#8217; a piece of equipment, a uniform item or a nasty look,\u00a0any of which brings the observing coach to an immediate halt.\u00a0 &#8220;Now,&#8221; said one coach to me during a basketball tournament in Greensboro, NC, a few years back, when a player stared down a referee following a questionable call, &#8220;that was stupid.\u00a0 That one act of defiance, temper tantrum or whatever you want to call it, may have\u00a0cost\u00a0that athlete a scholarship offer from one or more of the coaches here.\u00a0 How does that make any sense at all?\u00a0 But, I really don&#8217;t blame the kid.\u00a0 Know who I blame?\u00a0 The parents and coaches.\u00a0 They let\u00a0have let it\u00a0happen over and again without cracking down on the kid.\u00a0 He thinks it&#8217;s\u00a0acceptable because he&#8217;s never had to suffer the most\u00a0dire of all consequences &#8211; sitting on the bench as punishment.\u00a0 When a kid loses playing time, he or she gets the point, and so hopefully do the parents.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s sad that\u00a0we see\u00a0so much of it.\u00a0 It should never get to this point.\u00a0 High school athletes need to learn early on that being a jerk does not work and that there is a price to pay for choosing to be one.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Athletes gain reputations not just\u00a0for their skills but for their attitudes.\u00a0\u00a0A\u00a0prospect with a good\u00a0demeanor consistently gets more offers than the one who can&#8217;t control his emotions.\u00a0 A display of temper is trouble waiting to happen down the road and coaches know that it could happen during practice, a contest or on campus in social situations.\u00a0 All one has to do is read the daily sports new to discover yet another instance of an athlete&#8217;s encounters which have led to legal entanglements.<\/p>\n<p>When coaches watch athletes, they are examining more than their athletic talents.\u00a0 They are also scrutinizing how that athlete deals with unsettling scenarios.\u00a0 The athletes that have enough self-control to shake it off and move on are the ones coaches will recruit.\u00a0 Coaches can project this behavior in the college athletic, academic and social settings.\u00a0 And predicting how an athlete will\u00a0behave on and off the field or court is a big part of the scholarship-offering process.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Flippin&#8217; a bat.\u00a0 Flippin&#8217; a cap.\u00a0 Flippin&#8217; a towel.\u00a0 You name it and flippin&#8217; gets a high school athlete into hot water with college coaches.
