Situations come fast and furiously at athletes. Making the right decisions really matters.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

As a high school athlete wanting to play sports at the college level, the decisions you make this summer could mean rising\u00a0or falling\u00a0on college recruiting depth charts.\u00a0 Moreover,\u00a0those same decisions could instantly cause your house of cards to\u00a0crumble.\u00a0 Make good calls in tough situations and you have a shot to climb and survive.\u00a0 Make bad ones, though, and all that potential and promise can easily disappear before your own eyes like a beautiful car would in a David Copperfield magic trick.\u00a0 Which will it be for you?<\/p>\n

It’s sad, actually, because all the good decisions you make probably will never be noticed.\u00a0 They will not be flashed on the 11:00 news or captured in\u00a0a headline on the local newspaper or community Web site.\u00a0\u00a0Your pals are unlikely to line up and pat you on the back or call\u00a0with congratulations.\u00a0 College\u00a0coaches, too, will be unaware that you’ve done something really good for you and your future.\u00a0 But that anonymity comes with the territory.\u00a0 In the end, and more importantly, all the good moves\u00a0you choose will eventually stack high and be noticed as a true testament to your good character.<\/p>\n

Bad decisions, though?\u00a0 Different story.\u00a0 When you’re asked to go for a ride with friends drinking alcohol or taking drugs or planning to get into some innocent trouble, there will be a brief moment when you will literally hold your future in your own hands.\u00a0 You’ll know when that moment comes, too, because you are no dummy, not stupid, nor unaware of the\u00a0downside consequences.\u00a0 Regardless of how well\u00a0guarded your\u00a0reputation has been up to that singular point in time, it could all tumble down in a pile of regret and life-changing disappointment, that is, if\u00a0you\u00a0agree to get in that car and drive off into uncertainty.<\/p>\n

Stupidity is not an excuse for\u00a0making bad decisions.\u00a0\u00a0Think you won’t get caught?\u00a0 Think again.\u00a0 You’ve seen other kids just like you at your school or in your neighborhood that have suffered from\u00a0bad choices.\u00a0 You can call them\u00a0ignorant or unlucky, but had they not elected to go down that\u00a0road in the first place they\u00a0could have dodged the situation altogether.\u00a0 Yet, they didn’t.\u00a0 The fun, the risk, seemed worth it.\u00a0 And their lives will forever be tainted by what happened\u00a0to them as a result.<\/p>\n

Be smart this summer.\u00a0 Do what’s right and safe for your\u00a0future and your health.\u00a0\u00a0During that moment when\u00a0you are faced with the<\/em> decision,\u00a0Do I or don’t I, somehow, some way imagine if things\u00a0go awfully sour and all you’ve worked so hard for is lost forever in the blink of an eye.\u00a0 And then honestly ask yourself, Is it really worth it?<\/p>\n
