The inside scoop on how combines work and their value to prospects<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the best combines, high school athletes can go head to head with their peers in front of college coaches.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Combines are cropping up everywhere a high school athlete turns.\u00a0 And at NSR, our prospect-clients are constantly asking the justifiable question, “Should I go to these combines?\u00a0 Will I get exposure to college coaches?”<\/p><\/div>\n

It’s important to first identify and acknowledge the purpose of these combines.\u00a0 Some, particularly those operated by state high school associations, are used to evaluate senior talent for selecting athletes for their annual All-Star games.\u00a0 Rarely do college coaches attend these events.\u00a0\u00a0They may be interested in the\u00a0published\u00a0results, but few college coaches take\u00a0the time to watch them in person.\u00a0 In truth, most college staffs already have\u00a0evaluated these seniors and the athletes are either on their recruiting white boards or they aren’t.\u00a0 One more combine will not\u00a0usually\u00a0sway a staff to jump on an athlete because of these events.<\/p>\n

The higher profile combines run by\u00a0nationally known companies or\u00a0highly respected organizations are a different story altogether.\u00a0\u00a0College coaches will attend these events because they typically attract\u00a0the better underclass prospects.\u00a0 Coaches normally want to be seen at these events.\u00a0\u00a0They know that getting\u00a0eyes on the prospects\u00a0offers them the chance to\u00a0observe prospects in a competitive environment and the testing is typically more technically advanced which offer more accurate pictures of the prospects’ abilities.\u00a0 In these\u00a0situations, it can definitely be an advantage for\u00a0athletes to participate and get a leg up on their\u00a0peers which choose to sit them out.<\/p>\n

Still,\u00a0money\u00a0can be\u00a0a factor, too.\u00a0 Charging fees to the athletes\u00a0is a cash flow bonanza for some groups.\u00a0 Entry tickets\u00a0can rise into the hundreds of dollars for a one- or two-day combines\u00a0and this, of course, funds the events at the expense of the athletes.\u00a0\u00a0That in itself\u00a0can be problematic because not all high school student-athletes can muster up the bucks to attend leaving them on the outside looking in.\u00a0 Still, because of the\u00a0press\u00a0generated, particularly for the top performers, it can be a boon for\u00a0sophomores and juniors\u00a0that may have previously flown under the radar.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
