Learning self control starts with parents and discipline<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Tempers flair.\u00a0 Helmets get tossed.\u00a0 Clubs are tossed.\u00a0 Coaches dissed.\u00a0 It’s pouting at its very best.\u00a0 And, it all adds up to a big, fat zero with college coaches for high school prospects that charge down that dead end path.\u00a0 The athletic ability may be there, but the missing link is attitude and competitive maturity in far too many high school athletes wanting to play at the college level.<\/p>\n

Never mistake this fact:\u00a0 college coaches are watching and listening for any signs\u00a0that a prospect is incapable of self control.\u00a0 They don’t need it and they don’t want it, so they don’t recruit the prospects that display it.\u00a0 When they see a prospect lose their composure, their\u00a0minds leap forward to the day in college when that athlete will encounter a similar set of circumstances and the only evidence they have to predict\u00a0an athlete’s reaction is what the observe or what they are told by\u00a0reliable\u00a0sources such as other college coaches or competing coaches in high school or club sports.<\/p>\n

If your child is\u00a0unable to resist crossing the line in terms of good form, it’s time to have a heart to heart talk.\u00a0 Explain how this behavior goes beyond showing their competitive drive.\u00a0 Impress upon him or her that it is simply unacceptable regardless of the situation.\u00a0 It solves nothing.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, it creates problems\u00a0while closing doors to college programs.\u00a0 If you listen closely enough, you can hear the doors slamming shut one by one.<\/p>\n

Teach your athlete that\u00a0they do not want to go there.\u00a0 An education could be in the balance.\u00a0\u00a0Thousands of scholarship dollars are at risk.\u00a0 And, once in a lifetime opportunities can be swept away with one tantrum or\u00a0unsportsmanlike act.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
