{"id":6727,"date":"2012-10-24T12:46:46","date_gmt":"2012-10-24T12:46:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nsr-inc.com\/blog\/?p=6727"},"modified":"2012-10-24T12:46:46","modified_gmt":"2012-10-24T12:46:46","slug":"the-three-questions-every-college-coach-asks-about-a-high-school-athlete","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/the-three-questions-every-college-coach-asks-about-a-high-school-athlete\/","title":{"rendered":"The three questions every college coach asks about a high school athlete"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Time and time again, every prospect must face these fundamental inquiries<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6731\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6731\" style=\"width: 215px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nsr-inc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Athlete-worried-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6731\" title=\"Athlete - worried 1\" src=\"\/\/nsr-inc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Athlete-worried-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Athlete-worried-1.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Athlete-worried-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6731\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">How will you rate when the Big Three questions are asked?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Parents of high school prospects can rest assured that when college coaches are evaluating their child that three questions will eventually be asked if the coach is interesting in pursuing that prospect:<\/p>\n<p>Can he, or she, play?<\/p>\n<p>Is he, or she, a good kid?<\/p>\n<p>How are his, or her, grades?<\/p>\n<p>The first question, of course, is all about talent.\u00a0 An athlete either has it or not.\u00a0 Putting an athlete in the position to be taught by the best, to improve their speed, strength and agility or add to their skills set obviously helps, but talent is in most cases born and an athlete usually either has it or not.\u00a0 That said, talent is in the eye of the beholder.\u00a0 Some coaches rate one aspect more highly than another.\u00a0 It&#8217;s unpredictable to anticipate which coach will like what particular talent or skill.\u00a0 Nonetheless, the talent has to be there, so coaches will consistently ask about it.<\/p>\n<p>The second question encompasses a wide range of issues.\u00a0 Work ethic, character, citizenship, cooperation, coachable\u00a0and teamwork all come into play and are under this scope of consideration.\u00a0 If a prospect has shown armor dents in any of these, that athlete can be knocked off a recruiting white board without much more than a nod and a dry eraser.\u00a0 To avoid this, parents should talk candidly to their athlete about what is expected of them in each of these areas communicating clearly that when it comes to the scrutiny of college coaches each area has to be planned and then carefully managed throughout their high school career.<\/p>\n<p>The third question is simple &#8211; you have done the work and gotten the results in the classroom or you haven&#8217;t.\u00a0 The problem here is that the dynamics in each household are different and if good study habits and a healthy respect for academics hasn&#8217;t been established by the time an athlete starts the ninth grade, altering that course is a very difficult redirection to see through.\u00a0 In such cases, parents and the prospects have to disciplined and dedicated to making the necessary changes.\u00a0 It may even dictate that an outside counselor assist by following up on how the student is doing and if the parents are indeed holding the student accountable.\u00a0 Make no mistake, this is truly a big deal.\u00a0 It is not unusual for\u00a0the competition for a single scholarship offer comes down to which prospect has the best academic records.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Time and time again, every prospect must face these fundamental inquiries Parents of high school prospects can rest assured that when college coaches are evaluating their child that three questions will eventually be asked if the coach is interesting in pursuing that prospect: Can he, or she, play?
