actions which led to the new rules<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6649\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6649\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nsr-inc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/NCAA-logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6649\" title=\"NCAA logo\" src=\"\/\/nsr-inc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/NCAA-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/NCAA-logo.jpg 224w, https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/NCAA-logo-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6649\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The NCAA has been forced to take action.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We&#8217;re being told by the NCAA that they&#8217;ve had enough and that they&#8217;re going to do something about it&#8230;finally.\u00a0 Sportsmanship in men&#8217;s college basketball has declined significantly in recent years.\u00a0 As players have been allowed to flail away unchecked, physically and verbally, following\u00a0referees&#8217; calls\u00a0with which they disagree,\u00a0fans and television viewers\u00a0have had to endure the disintegration of good form front and center.<\/p>\n<p>One would expect that coaches would have more control over their players, and to be fair, some do.\u00a0 But, there are many hoops coaches that have turned a blind eye to their players&#8217; boorish behavior obstensibly not wanting to dampen their players&#8217; competitive spirit.\u00a0 Hogwash.\u00a0 The new rules being instituted are a result of coaches not having the chops to\u00a0quell their players.\u00a0 Instead,\u00a0too frequently athletes get a\u00a0pat on the butt, a\u00a0minute or\u00a0so on the bench, or a stern\u00a0look.\u00a0 But real discipline?\u00a0 Not really.\u00a0 Otherwise we would not see the need for the NCAA to\u00a0act.\u00a0 Nobody wants more rules, but sadly this move was necessary.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The kids today are different&#8221; is not an acceptable excuse for permitting them to\u00a0cross the traditional and acceptable line of good sportsmanship.\u00a0 Competitive drive cannot be valued over a respect for the game and its officials.\u00a0 And, coaches that make no sincere effort to control their seemingly uncontrollable players have forced the issue to the front burner.\u00a0 We only wish that they would\u00a0be held even more accountable by the NCAA, their conferences, administrations and athletic directors.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, the NBA has set the stage, no doubt, by allowing its players to openly admonish game officials and displaying any number of histrionics without meaningful consequences.\u00a0 They, too,\u00a0bear responsibility.\u00a0\u00a0Childish outbursts by overpaid professionals should not trickle down to college basketball, if for nothing else but to disavow those actions as grown men being stupid, but when there is no stopgap measure in place on the college level, well, you see the outcome.<\/p>\n<p>The NCAA\u00a0is taking action because coaches will not.\u00a0 The game has suffered.\u00a0 Fans have suffered.\u00a0 And colleges have suffered\u00a0from this erosion of one of\u00a0sport&#8217;s founding principles &#8211; sportsmanship.\u00a0 We applaud the NCAA for taking this stand and hope that officials will institute these guidelines\u00a0firmly and consistently.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coaches bear the blame for players&#8217;
