{"id":628,"date":"2010-06-18T08:34:14","date_gmt":"2010-06-18T14:34:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/?p=628"},"modified":"2010-06-18T08:34:14","modified_gmt":"2010-06-18T14:34:14","slug":"kayla-myers-sets-nc-all-time-record-for-hits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/kayla-myers-sets-nc-all-time-record-for-hits\/","title":{"rendered":"Kayla Myers Sets NC All-time Record for Hits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Two Homers in State Playoffs Put Swain County Star\u00a0in the Books<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For <strong>NSR<\/strong> softball prospect, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/app.nsr-inc.com\/prospectResume\/pProspectResume.aspx?id=163810\">Kayla Myers<\/a><\/strong>, setting records was nothing new.\u00a0 In fact, it had become her habit.\u00a0 By the end of her junior year at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swain.k12.nc.us\/education\/school\/school.php?sectionid=156\">Swain County High<\/a><\/strong> in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greatsmokies.com\/\">Bryson City, North Carolina<\/a>, Kayla had already helped lead the volleyball team to a state championship, the school\u2019s first in volleyball, set the school record for career three-point field goals as a point guard, and establish a new standard for base hits as a three-year starter on the softball team.\u00a0 All-conference and MVP plaques lined the walls in her room.\u00a0 Still, her next achievement would surpass even her high expectations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_682\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-682\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kaylamyers12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-682\" title=\"kaylamyers1\" src=\"\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kaylamyers12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"215\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-682\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kayla Myers heads to Catawba College as a five-tool player.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Going into her senior season for the Maroon Devils softball team this past spring, Kayla had a shot at becoming the all-time hits leader in North Carolina high school softball history.\u00a0 The 5\u20193\u201d, 115-pound Myers had a ways to go and she knew it.\u00a0 Needing more than\u00a045 hits to surpass Kassie Norton\u2019s 184 (South View), Kayla went to work.\u00a0 Undaunted by the pressure to get in the record books, Kayla would do what she usually does, focus and hit everything in the strike zone.\u00a0 As a senior, and her team going 22-4, she would bat .644 with 33 runs batted in, 14 steals and five home runs during the regular season.\u00a0 As her team headed into the conference tournament held at Hayesville High, the record seemed out of reach.\u00a0 Kayla needed 13 hits to be the new state standard bearer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then, Kayla did something a lot of her fans at Swain County High School had<strong> <\/strong>hoped for, but few actually expected.\u00a0 In three games, while leading her team\u00a0to the\u00a0conference tournament title, Kayla ran off 10 consecutive hits, including her sixth homer of the year.\u00a0 The extraordinary performance not only put her within three hits of the all-time record, but it also gave Swain the number one seed in the West division of the state tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Two games later, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catawba.edu\/\"><strong>Catawba College<\/strong> <\/a>signee would be facing conference nemesis Hayesville in the third round of the state playoffs needing but one hit to set the record and two to write another accomplishment on her lengthy resume.\u00a0 With the game tied at zeroes in the fifth inning, Kayla stepped to the plate with one runner on base.\u00a0 The first pitch she saw would not touch the ground again until it landed 210 feet from the batter\u2019s box beyond the right field fence.
