{"id":5639,"date":"2012-01-13T16:53:48","date_gmt":"2012-01-13T16:53:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nsr-inc.com\/blog\/?p=5639"},"modified":"2012-01-13T16:53:48","modified_gmt":"2012-01-13T16:53:48","slug":"mothers-dissatisfaction-with-sons-college-choice-exemplifies-selfishness-at-its-lowest-level","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/mothers-dissatisfaction-with-sons-college-choice-exemplifies-selfishness-at-its-lowest-level\/","title":{"rendered":"Mother&#8217;s dissatisfaction with son&#8217;s college choice exemplifies selfishness at its lowest level"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Athletes deserve to have the full support of their parents<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5643\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5643\" style=\"width: 376px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nsr-inc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Landon-Collins.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5643 \" title=\"Landon Collins\" src=\"\/\/nsr-inc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Landon-Collins-300x136.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"386\" height=\"195\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5643\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Landon Collins mother shamed him during his big moment on national TV.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>High school athletic prospects headed for college can have it rough.\u00a0 Outside chatter from their friends, teammates, coaches and even family can make their decision, regarding which school to attend, confusing and unsettling.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no easy way to shut down the chatter, either.\u00a0 It&#8217;s part of\u00a0enduring the recruiting process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, how&#8217;s a prospect supposed to sift through all the bothersome distractions?\u00a0 How can a seventeen- or eighteen-year-old kid\u00a0be expected to make the right call?\u00a0 We saw a painful example of this last week\u00a0when a\u00a0high school senior, a highly-touted\u00a0football\u00a0recruit from Louisiana, Landon Collins,\u00a0announced his intention to enroll\u00a0at the University of Alabama\u00a0only to hang his head in embarrassement as his own mother\u00a0openly decried the decision on national television.\u00a0 How can that\u00a0be?\u00a0 How can a mother, on what should have been the happiest day of\u00a0her son&#8217;s life, throw ice water on him in such a\u00a0public way?\u00a0 Here&#8217;s\u00a0how:\u00a0\u00a0to this mother, the\u00a0decision was about her and her desires, not about what would ultimately make her son happy.\u00a0 She should be ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>Young athletes should certainly consider the opinions and advice of their parents.\u00a0 But, parents have an obligation to support their children and their decisions when it comes to choosing a college regardless of the parent&#8217;s peronal preferences.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the athlete who must live with the decision.\u00a0 He or she knows what feels right to them.\u00a0 They&#8217;re the ones who will step onto the campus, eat in the chow hall, go to class, interact with the coaching staff, live with the team and compete day in and day out.\u00a0 The parent has a life to live, too, but it is not on the field, court, track or pitch.\u00a0 Their chance has long passed.\u00a0 Now, it&#8217;s time for their child to select which path he or she will take and that child deserves the respect and support of their parents even if the child&#8217;s decision is contrary to what the parent thinks may be best.<\/p>\n<p>Life and death will not hang in the balance of these college decisions, but living a full life\u00a0will.\u00a0 Athletes, even in the face of all the pressure and adolation, are people first who have to wake up each day satisfied that they have chosen the right course for themselves.\u00a0 Heads up parents, when you\u00a0elect\u00a0not to support your child&#8217;s college decision,\u00a0in the end you\u00a0are creating far more problems than\u00a0you are solving.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Athletes deserve to have the full support of their parents High school athletic prospects headed for college can have it rough.\u00a0 Outside chatter from their friends, teammates, coaches and even family can make their decision, regarding which school to attend, confusing and unsettling.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no easy way to shut down the chatter, either.\u00a0 It&#8217;s part &#8230;
