{"id":5316,"date":"2011-11-22T11:39:03","date_gmt":"2011-11-22T17:39:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/\/?p=5316"},"modified":"2011-11-22T11:39:03","modified_gmt":"2011-11-22T17:39:03","slug":"what-work-ethic-means-to-the-high-school-student-athlete","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/what-work-ethic-means-to-the-high-school-student-athlete\/","title":{"rendered":"What Work Ethic Means to the High School Student-Athlete"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Deciding to Commit is\u00a0<em>the<\/em> Tipping Point<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5322\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5322\" style=\"width: 249px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Athlete-practice-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5322\" title=\"Athlete - practice 2\" src=\"\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Athlete-practice-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"195\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5322\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taking a mental leap is needed to be known for your work ethic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To many high school athletes whose desire it is to advance to the college level, work ethic usually relates to how hard they practice and then play their sport, and that estimation is an individual perspective\u00a0at best.\u00a0\u00a0 They hear coaches, parents and fans say, &#8220;Work hard!&#8221;\u00a0 They hear it over and over again.\u00a0 That&#8217;s all good, but work ethic for the aspiring student-athlete takes on a deeper meaning.\u00a0 It is more than what you do at practice and in a game, meet or match.\u00a0 It&#8217;s how you approach your sport before during and after practice which truly defines an athlete&#8217;s work ethic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An athlete&#8217;s mental buy-in is crucial.\u00a0 Without psychological commitment, making the leap from high school to college athletics is doubtful.\u00a0 Those that do, win out in the end.\u00a0 Those that don&#8217;t risk seeing their dreams deteriorate into coulda-beens and\u00a0shoulda-beens.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There is a point, a tipping point, when\u00a0young athletes have to\u00a0decide if\u00a0they are all in or not.\u00a0 Will they push aside\u00a0distractions?\u00a0 Will they assume responsibility for there\u00a0own future?\u00a0 Will they truly commit to\u00a0achieving what few others will ever have the opportunity to experience?\u00a0 Will they\u00a0reach within themselves to discover the will and the dedication necessary?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Parents and coaches can&#8217;t do it for them.\u00a0 All the encouragement and planning and opening doors won&#8217;t\u00a0force them to\u00a0redirect their efforts.\u00a0 And, winning or losing are sideshows to what happens inside an athlete&#8217;s heart about moving forward or staying put.\u00a0 Some have it.\u00a0 Some don&#8217;t.\u00a0 Some will give it a cursory try.\u00a0\u00a0The special few, however, will want to delve\u00a0evermore\u00a0deeply into their beings\u00a0in an attempt to\u00a0get there.\u00a0 They are the athletes whose inner strength emerges\u00a0and is manifested in the form of uncommon work ethic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And, here&#8217;s what they will do:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Always early.<\/strong>\u00a0 On time is late to the athlete with a great work ethic, not because they want to be seen as early but because they want desperately to be there.\u00a0 They cannot wait to get started.\u00a0 They know that today could be the day which puts them another step closer to\u00a0realizing\u00a0their ultimate goal.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pre-practice routine.<\/strong>\u00a0 A focus on fundamentals is their first thought once they step on the court, field or pitch.\u00a0 They have a routine which hones their fundamentals to a higher level.\u00a0\u00a0 The repetition isn&#8217;t boring.\u00a0 It is today&#8217;s challenge to reach perfection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Practice approach.\u00a0<\/strong> Pushing, pushing, pushing.\u00a0 An excellent work ethic dictates that the athlete\u00a0goes at practice harder than anyone else.\u00a0 They concentrate more on\u00a0their coaches&#8217; instructions.\u00a0 They get in what could be described\u00a0as Practice Zone where the perfect execution of even the most simple drills\u00a0is always the\u00a0driving\u00a0mentality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Post-practice routine.<\/strong>\u00a0 Athletes that make the mental jump to total commitment understand that there is always something to improve on and which if they work hard enough\u00a0will make the difference between winning or losing a game, getting a scholarship offer or not.\u00a0 So, when everyone else walks away, it&#8217;s fundamentals one more time.\u00a0 Another two, five or ten minutes can make that significant difference a reality.<\/li>\n<li><strong>School work.<\/strong>\u00a0 Academics must be an integral, daily part of the athlete&#8217;s life.\u00a0 Nightly studying, reviewing the day&#8217;s classroom work and preparing for the next day&#8217;s assignments are attached to athletics on a straight line, not a dotted one.\u00a0 So, the athlete with a superior work ethic will\u00a0designate time to study every day and, yes, even sacrificing other things on the weekends to make the good grades that will inevitably draw attention from college\u00a0 coaches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Deciding to Commit is\u00a0the Tipping Point To many high school athletes whose desire it is to advance to the college level, work ethic usually relates to how hard they practice and then play their sport, and that estimation is an individual perspective\u00a0at best.\u00a0\u00a0 They hear coaches, parents and fans say, &#8220;Work hard!&#8221;\u00a0 They hear it &#8230;
