{"id":4252,"date":"2011-06-15T14:17:23","date_gmt":"2011-06-15T20:17:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/\/?p=4252"},"modified":"2011-06-15T14:17:23","modified_gmt":"2011-06-15T20:17:23","slug":"summer-camps-are-fun-but-prospects-should-understand-the-camp-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/summer-camps-are-fun-but-prospects-should-understand-the-camp-game\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer Camps Are Fun, but Prospects Should Understand the &#8220;Camp Game&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Zero In on the Schools Showing You Genuine Interest<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_4262\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4262\" style=\"width: 399px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Taylor-Maduro-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4262\" title=\"Taylor Maduro 2\" src=\"\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Taylor-Maduro-21-1024x731.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"409\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4262\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Choose camps where you can enhance your skills and develop relationships with coaches.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>NSR prospects across the globe are attending summer college sports camps.\u00a0 It&#8217;s an annual\u00a0ritual which is both misunderstood and essential for high school prospects.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Of course, big college camps will be filled with aspiring prospects hoping to\u00a0grab the attention\u00a0of their favorite coaches and players.\u00a0 These camps teach good skills, but the number of participants discourages\u00a0quality, individual instruction.\u00a0 That&#8217;s not good for prospects wanting\u00a0to progress to the college level.\u00a0\u00a0Freshmen and sophomores, who should be over star gazing, should attend camps which specialize in their positions.\u00a0 Juniors and seniors, on the other hand, should go to the camps of colleges\u00a0 which have\u00a0shown them keen interest.\u00a0 And mind you, one recruiting letter is not enough evidence to sway a prospect to attend that camp.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>College camps have another, less obvious purpose, too.\u00a0 In many cases, the head coaches are\u00a0using them as money raising efforts for the supplemental income of their coaching staffs, if not their own.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Especially\u00a0in\u00a0NCAA Division II and III as well as\u00a0NAIA and NJCAA programs, it is not unusual for assistant coaches to be nine- or ten-month employees whose salaries are\u00a0generally below what a high school head coach makes annually.\u00a0 These assistants\u00a0need additional income to justify working as second or third fiddles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In big\u00a0time programs, the money goes toward hiring\u00a0their own players and outside coaches\u00a0from\u00a0area high schools and other colleges to do the camp&#8217;s grunt work such as leading kids from\u00a0point\u00a0A to point B, rousting players up in the mornings, doing bed checks at night\u00a0and running drills and scrimmages.\u00a0\u00a0The hours are long, but it&#8217;s usually excellent\u00a0pay.\u00a0\u00a0But for the\u00a0head coaches,\u00a0perhaps the biggest benefits are\u00a0PR and seeing\u00a0firsthand their\u00a0top prospects, the ones they\u00a0desperately want to evaluate\u00a0and develop relationships with.\u00a0 Advantage, coach.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the end, camps are, or should be,\u00a0all about eventually getting scholarship offers for prospects.\u00a0 To that purpose, having a realistic view of which level\u00a0one fits in college athletics is paramount.\u00a0 For instance, if only DII, DIII and NAIA schools are contacting a prospect, going to a DI camp is pointless.\u00a0 The chances of landing an offer from a DI program is infintesimal.\u00a0 Dreams aside, DII prospects should be bellying up to the DII coaches at camps, not so much to land an offer on the spot, but to do up close and personal due diligence on the coach, the team and the campus.\u00a0 There is nothing more valuable to a prospect than spending multiple days in the presence of a coach with whom he or she might be spending a full four years with.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Zero In on the Schools Showing You Genuine Interest NSR prospects across the globe are attending summer college sports camps.\u00a0 It&#8217;s an annual\u00a0ritual which is both misunderstood and essential for high school prospects.\u00a0 Of course, big college camps will be filled with aspiring prospects hoping to\u00a0grab the attention\u00a0of their favorite coaches and players.\u00a0 These camps &#8230;
