{"id":4204,"date":"2011-06-13T14:34:15","date_gmt":"2011-06-13T20:34:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/\/?p=4204"},"modified":"2011-06-13T14:34:15","modified_gmt":"2011-06-13T20:34:15","slug":"for-recently-graduated-high-school-athletic-prospects-wheres-the-offer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/for-recently-graduated-high-school-athletic-prospects-wheres-the-offer\/","title":{"rendered":"For Recently Graduated High School Athletic Prospects, Where&#8217;s the Offer?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>No One Wants to Own the Failure<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_4218\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4218\" style=\"width: 293px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Athlete-consoled-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4218\" title=\"Athlete - consoled 2\" src=\"\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Athlete-consoled-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"303\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4218\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#39;s hard to watch a life long dream evaporate into thin air.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Literally thousands of deserving\u00a0senior prep athletic prospects, freshly graduated from high school,\u00a0will not realize their dreams of playing college sports this coming fall.\u00a0 Sad, isn&#8217;t it?\u00a0\u00a0All the work, time, effort and money invested in this crucially important dream and nothing to show for it in terms of a\u00a0scholarship offer.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>What went wrong?\u00a0 Well it depends on whom you ask.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Quiz the high school, club or travel coaches and they will feign responsibility.\u00a0 The excuses are predictable.\u00a0 The athlete or parent didn&#8217;t express an interest in time to get them an offer.\u00a0 The college coaches they know had already signed the players they needed.\u00a0 The prospect&#8217;s attitude really went downhill as the season came to a close, or maybe the excuse would be that the kid and parents wouldn&#8217;t follow up on the leads offered to them.\u00a0 Whatever the reason, one thing is for certain; personal accountability will not be a part of the answer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nor should it be, frankly.\u00a0 It is not the coach&#8217;s responsibility to promote their players to college coaches.\u00a0 Their job is to teach the athlete and coach the game.\u00a0 Promoting athletes is not inherent to their position.\u00a0 Some will say it is, but really it&#8217;s not.\u00a0 First, about one in a hundred of these coaches has a clue about how the recruiting process actually works including when and which college coaches can evaluate or contact prospects.\u00a0 Few are aware about the NCAA and NAIA eligibility centers and what their purpose is.\u00a0 Fewer still can tell you how many scholarships a DI, DII, NAIA or NJCAA school is permitted to offer.\u00a0 And, want details on what the National Letter of Intent entails?\u00a0 Good luck.\u00a0 All that said, they don&#8217;t know these things because it is not their job to know.\u00a0 You do not learn these things through osmosis.\u00a0 You learn it by being immersed in recruiting every day, year after year, not by dabbling in it a few weeks or months of the year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4222\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4222\" style=\"width: 346px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Athlete-parent.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4222\" title=\"Athlete - parent\" src=\"\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Athlete-parent.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"356\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4222\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Parents often struggle with explaining where things went wrong in the process.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ask the parents what happened.\u00a0 It&#8217;s more likely they will take some of the blame because in the end they know it was avoidable.\u00a0 They listened to people and coaches who said that if their kid was good enough that college coaches would find them.\u00a0 They listened when told that their kid would be seen and recruited if they just played club or travel sports.\u00a0 They listened when outsiders said scouting services were a waste of time and money.\u00a0 They listened and they came away with zilch.\u00a0 And now, they have to look their kid in the eye every day knowing that had they taken the aggressive, professional route, things most likely would have been different because their child really did have the ability, desire and grades to play at some college level.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Finally, ask the athlete, if you can look them in the eye without seeing\u00a0their once in a lifetime dream fade in the distance.\u00a0 They&#8217;ll shrug and walk away, reminded that they were taken down\u00a0the wrong\u00a0path by adults who should have known better, but instead clung to archaic ideas of how dreams in the real, modern world of recruiting are captured\u00a0and embraced because\u00a0they really were that special.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No One Wants to Own the Failure Literally thousands of deserving\u00a0senior prep athletic prospects, freshly graduated from high school,\u00a0will not realize their dreams of playing college sports this coming fall.\u00a0 Sad, isn&#8217;t it?\u00a0\u00a0All the work, time, effort and money invested in this crucially important dream and nothing to show for it in terms of a\u00a0scholarship &#8230;
