Lessons Have Been Learned from the 16-year-old Wes Leonard<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a>\"\"<\/a>Don’t we all wish we could go out like Fennville (Mich) High School athlete Wes Leonard exited this world?\u00a0 With his team’s undefeated season on the line in overtime, Wes drove the lane and put up the winning shot with thirty seconds remaining.\u00a0 As his team mobbed Wes and celebrated the win, the junior collapsed on the\u00a0hardwood, victim of sudden cardiac arrest.\u00a0\u00a0He was pronounced dead at the hospital\u00a0a short time later.<\/p>\n

The story has touched the nation, coast to coast.\u00a0 As sad an outcome as this story has, Wes Leonard went out as a true hero.\u00a0 He had just won the big game and the last things he saw, heard and indeed experienced\u00a0were the sheer joy of his teammates, classmates, parents and friends as they flooded the court.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Certainly, we would liked to have seen how this young man’s life would have unfolded, but it was not to be.\u00a0 Wes was known in his community as one of the nicest kids in the tiny town of Holland, situated near the eastern shore of Lake Michigan on Lake Macatawa.\u00a0 As the\u00a0school’s star\u00a0quarterback, he had a bright athletic future.\u00a0 Adults and youngsters alike looked up to this stallwart\u00a0young man.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But, Wes’\u00a0abrupt departure gives us all\u00a0a moment\u00a0to reflect on life and how best to be remembered.\u00a0\u00a0By all accounts,\u00a0Wes took nothing for\u00a0granted, worked hard at everything he undertook,\u00a0treated others with respect and kindness, and drove himself relentlessly toward\u00a0achieving his goals.\u00a0 Is there a better way to approach life’s challenges or to give example to others?\u00a0 No, there isn’t.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the young age of 16, Wes Leonard had figured out one of life’s most important riddles — how to construct and leave an admirable, lasting legacy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
