Brandon Davies tested the BYU honor code only to discover that it meant more to the school than an NCAA top seed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Brigham Young University’s basketball program was knocked for an unexpected loop this week when it\u00a0suspended third leading scorer and top rebounder, sophomore Brandon Davies for an unspecified Honor Code infraction.\u00a0 The 6’9″ forward was the inside presence the Cougars relied upon to complement Player of the Year candidate Jimmer Fredette’s frenetic playing\u00a0style.\u00a0 As the team\u00a0neared what would have been the school’s first\u00a0ever top seed in the NCAA tournament,\u00a0BYU\u00a0chose not to look the other way regarding Davies’ behavior.\u00a0 The decision will most likely cost the Cougars that coveted number one seed, but aside from the Cougars’ tournament fortunes it also shines a bright light on the need for other colleges to hold players accountable for their unseemly actions.\u00a0 The Mormon affiliated university in Provo, Utah, has long been a bastion of conservative values, so when Davies committed to BYU he must have been well aware of the no-fly zones for student-athletes.\u00a0\u00a0Even though it has been confirmed that Davies’\u00a0infraction was\u00a0not of a criminal nature, the school’s steadfastness to its principles\u00a0emphasizes\u00a0a simple truth:\u00a0 Far too many\u00a0colleges ignore the\u00a0boorish behavior of student-athletes for the sake of putting\u00a0up W’s.\u00a0 We applaud Brigham Young University for setting an example other colleges would do well to follow, even if it means losing a game, a\u00a0conference title, or a shot at a national championship.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
