This Little Gesture Can Inspire Even After a Dressing Down<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Never underestimate the value of a pat on the back.\u00a0 Whether it comes from a parent, a coach, a teacher\u00a0or a teammate, this simple\u00a0act of appreciation goes much farther than most people realize.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When I was a kid playing youth ball in a small community, I had the same coach for basketball and football.\u00a0 His name was Addison Marable.\u00a0 He was short, squatting and overweight.\u00a0 He also had more passion for coaching kids than perhaps anyone I’ve ever encountered in sports.\u00a0 He was a hard-nosed old cuss.\u00a0 He’d scream and yell at the smallest and biggest kids on the field, including me.\u00a0 If\u00a0we messed up, he was in our grills letting\u00a0us know about it in no uncertain terms.\u00a0 His words made parents on the sidelines cringe.\u00a0 Then, as he was walking away from us after a good tongue lashing, he always, always made a statement and then did something which made the us forget the yelling:\u00a0 “I know you can do better.”\u00a0 Then, he would pat us on the back.\u00a0 It worked every time.\u00a0 We would forget about the messenger and remember the message.\u00a0 He was saying, “You can do it.\u00a0 I have confidence in you.”\u00a0\u00a0 It made the world of difference in the results he got from us.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Athletes and coaches would do well to learn from that lesson from a real old ball coach.\u00a0 Good or bad, the players on\u00a0your team are yours to live with.\u00a0 They know if they are contributors or not.\u00a0 They know who’s going on to play at the next level.\u00a0 But, none of that matters.\u00a0 What counts is that in the very moment of trying to succeed that the coaches and players appreciate the effort and want\u00a0the player\u00a0to succeed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
