An athlete’s statistics or numbers don’t tell the whole story, but they help give coaches a little perspective on a possible recruit. It’s especially noticable to college coaches if an athlete is padding their stats or abilities.<\/p>\n
Want to do yourself, and\u00a0college coaches a huge favor?\u00a0 Don’t fudge on your stats.\u00a0 Regardless of how good or bad they may be. Coaches want to evaluate you based on what you have done, not on what you wish you had done.<\/p>\n
College coaches don’t recruit athletes based solely on their stats, they go and watch them perform as well. So if your stats don’t match your performance then it will be obvious you lied.<\/p>\n
If you are good enough to play at the college level,\u00a0coaches will determine that by evaluating you based on some\u00a0benchmarks.\u00a0 Size, speed, strength, athleticism, attitude, grades, and\u00a0statistical numbers are all significant.\u00a0 Every coach\u00a0gives\u00a0more weight to one skill than another\u00a0according to their vision for the team\u00a0and the school’s entrance requirements.<\/p>\n
To that, some coaches\u00a0put more credence in solid numbers than others who may need to fill their roster\u00a0with excellent students\u00a0due to high admission standards.<\/p>\n
In any case, accurate, athletic numbers (statistics) are an integral part of the recruiting process.\u00a0 We see excellent athletes with low numbers get recruited every day. It’s part of college sports.<\/p>\n
Slumps, down years, injuries, outside influences — they can all take their toll on performance.\u00a0 Coaches know these things, be assured.\u00a0 Hide nothing.\u00a0 Trust that what you have to offer is what a coach wants an incoming student-athlete.<\/p>\n
Some kids are fundamentally\u00a0sound, but they are missing that one little something which is\u00a0keeping them from posting impressive stats or having a banner year.\u00a0 If that’s your situation, live with it.\u00a0 Explain what happened in an intro letter to the coach.<\/p>\n
If your statistics are lackluster, let your athleticism, your grades, and your attitude speak louder than stats.\u00a0 On the other hand, if you have produced outstanding stats, be sure to emphasize your all-around abilities in leadership, work ethic and the classroom.\u00a0 While stats certainly aren’t everything, just be sure that the ones you do post are accurate.<\/p>\n
