{"id":3022,"date":"2011-02-02T13:55:41","date_gmt":"2011-02-02T19:55:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/\/?p=3022"},"modified":"2011-02-02T13:55:41","modified_gmt":"2011-02-02T19:55:41","slug":"attitude-can-be-the-linchpin-during-the-recruiting-process","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/attitude-can-be-the-linchpin-during-the-recruiting-process\/","title":{"rendered":"Attitude Can Be the Linchpin During the Recruiting Process"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Being Recruited by a College is a Privilege Few Kids Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Athlete-on-phone.bmp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3086\" title=\"Athlete on phone\" src=\"\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Athlete-on-phone.bmp\" alt=\"\" width=\"356\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a>Several years ago one of the top softball prospects in our state lived nearby.\u00a0 She was a multi-talented player with all five tools to play at the highest Division I level.\u00a0 She had excellent foot speed and terrorized defenses on the base paths.\u00a0 She would give up her body to go after any ball hit her way.\u00a0 Her arm strength and accuracy were superb.\u00a0 And, she could hit for both power and average.\u00a0 There was only one down side to this kid and that was between her ears.\u00a0 She thought that <em>she<\/em> had hung the moon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This attitude came back to bite her in a big, big way when the first DI\u00a0coach\u00a0called her.\u00a0\u00a0The kid was\u00a0at the local mall with friends milling about, not doing much of anything when\u00a0her cell phone rang.\u00a0 She answered\u00a0and said hello.\u00a0 When the coach introduced herself to the prospect, the kid said in response, &#8220;Hey.\u00a0 Could you call me back later, I&#8217;m at the mall right now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That was the last\u00a0attempt the coach\u00a0made to contact the kid.\u00a0 Moreover, she told other coaches about\u00a0the experience.\u00a0 Soon, the hottest prospect in our area was only hearing from DII\u00a0and DIII schools.\u00a0 The DI path had dried up completely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/joshuamarocchi21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3090\" title=\"joshuamarocchi2\" src=\"\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/joshuamarocchi21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a>It didn&#8217;t help that\u00a0the kid&#8217;s\u00a0father called the local newspaper and announced that\u00a0his daughter was being pursued by\u00a0an ACC school\u00a0even though it was untrue.\u00a0 In fact, the father had called the school and talked to an assistant coach about his\u00a0daughter.\u00a0 The coach, of course, said\u00a0they\u00a0were interested, as would any coach regarding kids with outstanding stats and qualifying grades.\u00a0 But, what the father didn&#8217;t know was that the school had long ago completed their recruiting class and had no real intention of evaluating or recruiting the man&#8217;s daughter.\u00a0 And, as you might expect, there was no follow-up from the staff.\u00a0 But, there it was in black and white in the newspaper for everyone to\u00a0read.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That first phone call had set the stage for a whole string of miscalculations by\u00a0the prospect and her father which led to her being pushed aside by practically every DI softball coach in the region\u00a0which had originally shown interest in recruiting her.\u00a0 Their cocky attitude and sense of entitlement had\u00a0destroyed her chances of securing a DI level scholarship offer.\u00a0 The word had\u00a0quickly spread that this was a family to avoid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>High school student-athletes get one\u00a0chance\u00a0to be recruited.\u00a0\u00a0Mess up like this kid and parent did and college coaches will leave a family in the dust without a second thought.\u00a0 The competition for scholarship\u00a0offers is extremely tight.\u00a0\u00a0There are literally hundreds of quality prospects and parents available to coaches.\u00a0 They do not have the time or patience to\u00a0deal with people who believe they are God&#8217;s gift to colleges.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Parents-kid-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3092\" title=\"Parents &amp; kid 10\" src=\"\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Parents-kid-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a>Families should\u00a0discuss how they are going to approach talking to and communicating with coaches.\u00a0 And, families\u00a0should\u00a0understand that\u00a0behind the smiles\u00a0and compliments, coaches are\u00a0carefully watching to make certain that the\u00a0kids they bring aboard are good fits for\u00a0their teams and their schools.\u00a0 Approaching phone calls and one-on-one conversations with anything other than a grateful and humble\u00a0demeanor\u00a0could be a critical and costly error.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Treat the\u00a0recruiting process as a\u00a0unique opportunity that few kids in America get to experience.\u00a0 Understand that\u00a0recruiting is a two-way street with coaches and prospects going and coming on the same\u00a0street, meeting and getting to know\u00a0one another with the ultimate goal of both making the very best decision.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Being Recruited by a College is a Privilege Few Kids Experience Several years ago one of the top softball prospects in our state lived nearby.\u00a0 She was a multi-talented player with all five tools to play at the highest Division I level.\u00a0 She had excellent foot speed and terrorized defenses on the base paths.\u00a0 She &#8230;
