{"id":2574,"date":"2011-01-05T10:37:47","date_gmt":"2011-01-05T16:37:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/\/?p=2574"},"modified":"2011-01-05T10:37:47","modified_gmt":"2011-01-05T16:37:47","slug":"twis-coaches-are-fired-for-winning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/twis-coaches-are-fired-for-winning\/","title":{"rendered":"T*W*I*S: Coaches are Fired for Winning?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_2579\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2579\" style=\"width: 340px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ralph-Friedgen1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2579\" title=\"Ralph Friedgen\" src=\"\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ralph-Friedgen1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2579\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen couldn&#39;t save his job with a 9-4 record and being named ACC Coach of the Year.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It&#8217;s time for that time-honored \u00a0ritual.\u00a0 You know which one I&#8217;m talking about, right?\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s the one which \u00a0immediately follows a sport&#8217;s season when coaches get canned for not producing enough W&#8217;s.\u00a0 Happens all the time.\u00a0 We&#8217;re used to it.\u00a0 We&#8217;re even numb to it.\u00a0 The coaching carousel turns round and round and we&#8217;re just along for the ride.\u00a0 But wait, we have a new twist to the trend.\u00a0\u00a0Now athletic directors and professional team owners are firing coaches who\u00a0<em>do<\/em> produce W&#8217;s.\u00a0 Hmmm.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a new one.\u00a0 In December,\u00a0the University of\u00a0Maryland unceremoniously discarded\u00a0Ralph\u00a0Fridgen, their 10-year coach and UM alum.\u00a0\u00a0You might remember\u00a0Ralph.\u00a0\u00a0A week prior to being\u00a0handed\u00a0the funky-flag pink slip, he was named ACC Football Coach of the\u00a0Year.\u00a0 His 2010 Terp team went 9-4, finished second in the Atlantic Division,\u00a0and\u00a0won the Military Bowl against East Carolina.\u00a0\u00a0Up the turnpike a piece, although he\u00a0produced a 7-6 team\u00a0in 2010 and\u00a0the team was invited to a bowl, Dave Wannstedt is out at Pitt.\u00a0 His teams went 42-31 in six seasons.\u00a0 Oh, and he&#8217;s a Pitt alum, too.\u00a0 At his going-out speech, Coach Dave said this:\u00a0 &#8220;I am a Pitt guy. I&#8217;m a Pittsburgh guy.
